BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A purported audio recording by the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq vows to step up the group's fight against the United States, saying, "We haven't had enough of your blood yet."

The recording was posted Friday on an Islamist Web site and the speaker is identified as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, successor to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

"Come down to the battlefield, you coward," the speaker says on the recording, which CNN cannot independently confirm as the voice of al-Muhajir.

Calling President Bush a "lame duck" and labeling outgoing U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld a "coward," the speaker tells Bush not to "run away as your lame defense secretary ran away," referring to Rumsfeld's resignation Wednesday.

Critics of the U.S.-led war in Iraq have laid much of the blame for its problems on Rumsfeld. The war's growing unpopularity contributed to the unseating of the Republican Party in both chambers of Congress in Tuesday's election. (Watch Rumsfeld acknowledge what's going wrong -- 2:23)

Much of the Iraqi insurgency has been blamed on al Qaeda in Iraq, whose former chief al-Zarqawi was killed in a U.S.-led airstrike in June.

The speaker on the tape vows that al Qaeda in Iraq will not stop its jihad "until we sit under the olive trees in Rumiya after we blow up the wicked house known as the White House." He says the first phase of the jihad is now over, and that the next phase -- building an Islamic nation -- has begun.

"The victory day has come faster than we expected," he says. "Here is the Islamic nation in Iraq victorious against the tyrant. The enemy is incapable of fighting on and has no choice but to run away."

The speaker claims his al Qaeda army has 12,000 soldiers -- with 10,000 more waiting in the wings to join them.

And he pledges those troops to the service of the Mujahedeen Shura Council and the Islamic Nation of Iraq. He calls on other insurgent groups in Iraq to join with them.

"We have to be unified by the sword, even though disagreements exist between us," al-Muhajir said.

"Go where God has ordered you to go and know that we are with you. We are your soldiers and your men," he says.

Uh huh.

So very interesting how this happens right when the Republicans ain't lookin' so hot and are scrabbling to get the American Sheeple back into the fold, isn't it?

"CNN cannot independently confirm as the voice of al-Muhajir."

That's because it's probably Dick Cheney speaking through a washcloth over a tape recorder.

Oy.

So you actually believe this, then?

Mmmk.

(And anyone with a modicum of interpretation ability would know that I wasn't literally suggesting that Cheney himself made the recording, but was rather more broadly alluding to the fact that this is quite probably just another well-timed scare device planned by Bu$h&Co and their pet media to stir up sentiment and try to get everyone back on their side.)

And I hardly think that Bush-bashing will ever really become stale, darling.

This is one topic I agree with everyone here. Our troops have been in Iraq for long enough. They can only do so much ,their not miracle workers. When I watch the news now days, it gets to the point now I turn on something else because it's just too depressing.

jaily, we lost. what possible good could come from it now? i mean i can see if it had come on sunday or monday, but after the election? the gop has no power. the democrats have the congress. they have the purse strings and the gavels and the subpoenas. i never agreed with the constant assertions that the gop was using terror alerts as campaign props, but given the timing of some of them, i could understand why some did. but now? get people back on their side? for what? are they going to storm the capital and demand that they get a do-over on the election?

i understand that bush bashing will never go out of style, but this is alw territory, unless of course you're suggesting that the administration was so incompetent that they didn't know when their own elections were and meant to get this out earlier. was that where you were headed?

I don't think its a fake.

Yep. Sounds like the dreams of uneducated, penniless peasants who have been schooled in nothing but radical Islam to me.

Smells of Rove to me. Just like the Rummy dismissal. Rove and the Neo-cons were prepared for this election loss. Tapes and threats are made everyday against the US by militias and terrorists groups around the world. Why can't CNN site this "Islamist Web site" ? The Republicans are not surprised by anything. No one is that stupid.

There is always a plan B. There is/was a contingency plan in place for the loss the Republicans suffered. It is what you are seeing this week. There was no surprise. Our government cannot afford to be surprised. They may not be happy but they keep their eye on the prize.

Think about the ways and the extremes the GOP will go to hold the presidency. They would never allow Pelosi to take over should an impeachment go through. They also know how to prepare for the Hillary threat. The Republicans did not gain power by not thinking ahead. Everything is cold and calculated, there are variables and obstacles, but planning is key.

I can't imagine this new congress changing very much. The democrats wanted the war seemingly as much as the GOP. You have to remember who we are dealing with. The Bush administration has been socially engineering us for years. Before the war in Iraq opponents to the war (and most of the world) were screaming at the top of there lungs to stop it. Remember back how large the campaign was to endorse the war. Almost complete support from Democrats and media outlets (NY Times). Despite there being enough contradictory evidence of the WMD available to everyone.

Our government is hard at work building a conflict with Iran. Papa will call me a crazy tree-hugger tin foil hat wearin' terrorist lover but I will take that to inform a few more people. Look at how quickly Pelosi shut her trap. Clinton will not utter a word. They can bash Iraq all they want. You will not hear them say they were wrong. You wont see them stop any action on Iran. Pay attention everyday to the news you read and see, especially if it concerns Iran.

um, if the gop is so almighty powerful and brilliant, just how the f*ck'd we manage to lose both f*ckin' houses of congress there, brainiac? c'mon seriously. we can manage all the nefarious plottings and machinations mejusthearvoices alleges but we can't tamper with enough voting machines to hold one or two senate seats when the final outcomes were decided by less that 10,000 votes a piece?

I'm not saying the elections were rigged either way. I think there was a plan in place for whichever way the vote went. Plan B or A is unfolding now. I would study the candidates that lost seats, were they liabilities for the GOP?

Bush did a really good job at lying very low before this important election. He could have done some great things for your party if he had dismissed Rumsfeld sooner. Something's not right there.

Maybe with the GOP can blame the democrats for a messed up exit from Iraq in 2008? I wish I knew, but for me to sit back and assume Rove doesn't know what he was doing would be stupid. Why isn't Rove gone?

Actually, I've always though Rove was stupid--stupid as a politician and stupid as a statesman. The only thing he was "smart" about or, more precisely, devious about, was running a campaign.

And really the only thing that made his campaigns work was his sadistic penchant for attacking people viciously. It worked against Ann Richards, it worked against John McCain, it worked against Al Gore and it worked against John Kerry. But once he started scapegoating the gays, he was sealing his own fate.

Because gays are smarter than Karl Rove. Mmmm-hmmm! Yes, we ARE! *snap*

Add to that mix the fact that the blue-blooded New England Yankee Bush family has always had a tin ear for the real experiences of the American people, despite Dubya's poor imitation of a Texan.

Then when you top it off with the shocking lack of understanding of Near East and Far East culture on the part of Cheney, Rumsfeld and the Neocons who made policy, the Bush regime had to fail sooner or later.

They were stupid about the war, stupider about Katrina and stupidest about immigration. They did absolutely NOTHING right.

ENOUGH with this talk that they were smart.

It was the worst presidency ever.

yeah, turd blossom really managed this one didn't he? handing the democrats nearly a 30 seat majority in the house? that's why bush praised him so highly in the day after press conference. no matter what you think of him, the president of the united states doesn't make jokes like he did in a press conference for no reason. word now is that rove's boy mehlman will be replaced by mike tyson's favorite politician michael steele against his will. he went to the same well too many times. too much rhetoric, too few ideas and too few accomplishments. the gop was in power long enough to get complacent and lose their way. they lost touch with what it means to be conservative and started paying too much attention to what they thought would get them re-elected and that's a recipe for disaster.

or maybe this was all a brilliantly conceived rovian plan to teach bush a lesson by putting him in a position to be impeached. boy, that'll teach him.

"The fun & games have just begun."

What does that even fricking mean? Are you retarded, Roxy, or merely callous and insensitive?

For years all we've heard is how dreaded Al Quaida is and now that there is a Democratic majority in the legislative branch, "The fun & games have just begun"? How IS that? Please explain yourself. They make another threat against US soil... is that fun or games? Or both?

I don't get you. I don't get you because you don't explain yourself clearly. But then again, you just said you'd make a joke rather than make sense so perhaps the entire thing is a lesson in futility.
