Pushing tolerence is bad

Thanks to the watchful stepfather of a Henderson High School student in Hendersonville, Tennessee, teachers will no longer be “pushing Islamic tolerance” on the students in the form of religious field trips.

Mike Conner, concerned his stepdaughter would be exposed to knowledge in a 36-week world studies course, got angry at back-to-school night when he heard of a planned Sept. 4 field trip to a mosque and a Hindu temple. So he spoke up because, you know, “If we as parents don’t begin speaking up, no one will.”

The honors course – which is an elective – has been offered by Hendersonville High for a decade. The curriculum includes world religions, and students spend three weeks on that topic, learning about Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam, said school system spokesman Jeremy Johnson. In the past, the students have typically visited a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple and a Muslim mosque without parental complaints.



Conner believes that between the trips and the assignment, the school was clearly promoting the Islamic faith.

“The teacher was pushing Islamic tolerance,” Conner said. “We did not want to make this about religion – they forced us to.”

And he won by force. On Sept 17., the school system issued a statement:

“After receiving a parent complaint regarding field trip locations, our district has reviewed the practice and decided to eliminate field trips to religious venues from this class, as it does not provide equal representation to all the religions studied in the course unit.”

I cannot tolerate all this tolerence.

Raising a nation of intolerant idiots. When is this type of ignorance going to die out?

I guess trips to Holocaust museums are out of the question, too.

I had the same kind of class in high school. A few weeks studying each major religion, their origins, controversies, etc. It was a very fun class. No one from my small Texas town complained.

I agree with the idea, but I'd replace the word 'accept' with 'respect'.

Promoting tolerance is prohibited - perfect example of why these people should just go to Russia if they are so anti-American and down with Putin's 2013 Russian approach to anti-tolerance.

I say that with due irony realizing that that's exactly what people use to say about the labor movement; still, if the shoe, or should I say black shirt, fits!

you must be tolerant of other peoples belief. if youre not your part of the problem and have no right to expect anyone to be tolerant of you.

I believe in God, but if you dont, thats fine with me, as long as you dont criticize or try to stifle my belief. I always laugh when someone for instance says you dont have the right to have a Christmas Tree or Cross. thats very intolerant. it doesnt mean that you must worship, but you should respect others believes as well.

I do realize that some God believers are just as bad as well and will tell those who dont believe that they are going to hell or something dumb like that. thats just as bad.

i dont agree with that at all Joe. in fact, Catholics, other Christians spend a lot of time in Africa helping the poor and starving regardless of whether they believe in Jesus, Allah, Muhammad, the SunGod or none at all. In Fact the Vatican has great relations with Israel and a number of Muslim Countries.

Why do catholic charities do so much work in third world countries? What do they call those workers? What do they call the buildings they build there?

And really- none of you have ever been invited to church? Had a happy Christian turn up on your doorstep? Never had someone try to "save" you? No ideas why they put a bible in every single hotel room?

But Reginald, even crediting John's author, Jesus was speaking to fellow Jews about the Father. And who was the Father? The God of Israel. If Jesus actually said this, it can't be taken out of the context of a declaration by a rabbi to other Jews about their own spiritual and political system.

Of course, the author of the Book of John might have meant something quite different in a very different context, something much more catholic (universal), but that's beside the point I was making.
