For gosh sake, you're going to New York, not Atlantis! Just go! Wear whatever the flick you want. Embrace your inner tourist. Believe me, no one will see you as anything, because they won't even be looking at you. There'll be a million other people on the streets all flying by without a care for who you are or what you look like.
If you go worrying about looking like this or that, you'll never let go enough to have any fun. I say put on the pink spandex stirrup pants, glitter appliqué snowman sweater and stand in the middle of the sidewalk, right in the way of all those elitist New Yorkers (whose economy you'll be supporting) and spin, baby!

>> BUT I totally disagree with the purse, NEVER on a vacant
>> seat, NEVER just on a lap......it can be taken so
>> easily.....I've seen it happen in Europe.
I do it all the time, here in New York. Of course, the vacant seat is pulled right beside me and I can see it. Most of the time, I put the strap of the purse on the chair around my arm. Holding it on my neck makes it impossible for me to eat. Just on my lap me when I drop food, which, unfortunately happens often, it's on or in my purse. The lap is for my napkin as I am a slob.
Still, what do you suggest to do with a purse so one can eat? I'd love your advice. If it cannot be "on you" for the bulkiness, or beside you on a vacant chair pulled close or on the floor between your feet. Where?
I have put my purse on the table, right beside my food -- but sometimes that is also awkward as my purse is relatively large.
I also carry a huge backpack (many actors in NY do this -- we have to have headshots, Backstage, reading material [for long waits at auditions], or changes of clothes for certain work, etc. And the backpack only fits on the floor or in a chair. Generally, with my backpack (where I also put my camera's, etc.), I put my purse behind it, in my sight and about ten inches from my knee.
>> A purse, camerabag, whatever ALWAYS needs to be attached to
>> you.....it is not safe on a vacant chari or on a lap. Best,
>> is wearing it in front of you if possible.....then you can
>> see if anyone is coming.
Ever tried peeing like that . . .?! Of course, my other notes about that above. I find it nearly impossible to enjoy a meal with an extra five to ten pounds hanging on my neck, it hurts!
And as stated above . . .the vacant chair is ten inches or less from my knee and oftentimes, the long strap of the purse is wrapped to my nearest wrist. Never ever, knock on wood, have I ever had a problem.
But, hey, I agree . . .if a hanging purse on your neck during meals doesn't bother you. By all means, keep it attached!

Agree , AngA re: one's purse. 40 years in NY and have NEVER been pick pocketed or lost my "purse". If there's no room on a restaurant table, then on the floor, LOOPED around my foot. My fave and most useful for everyday: A lightweight, black, square (16 x 12) microfiber shoulder bag (16" shoulder strap, which fits perfectly under your arm or in front of you on mass transit), with many internal zipped pockets for carrying all the essentials - including newspaper, makeup, camera, cell phone, pens, maps, keys, wallet etc. Everything in one, tidy place. Microfiber bags are great in rain, snow, etc. They never get wet, or worn out, and look metro.
re: Question re: acting my age#30
Posted: 1/20/08 at 9:36pmI prefer not to put purses on the dinner table. My purses all have long straps, so I kind of sit on the strap, and have the purse hanging down in front of my chair!

Think about it, where do you put your purse when you use the public restroom in a restaurant? On the floor. Then you are going to come back and put it on the table? Yuck!
re: Question re: acting my age#32
Posted: 1/20/08 at 9:47pm..never do i put mine on the restroom floor??!!! Mine has "feet" on the bottom, so it's stands UP from the floor.

broadwaytourist, did you not act your age the last time you were in NY?

re: Question re: acting my age#34
Posted: 1/20/08 at 9:54pmSueleen, that's the primary reason I don't like it. Even if you do not put your purse on a bathroom floor, a purse is not clean unless you're in the habit of cleaning it each time you use it. Also, when I'm eating out, there really isn't enough room on the table for purses! It ruins the ambiance, if you ask me.

For the ladies, Shbrt?
Money is the least thing I have in my purse! I've got tons of things that I must carry around with me, they'd never fit!
re: Question re: acting my age#37
Posted: 1/20/08 at 10:59pmI am a lady, and I've used a money belt and also a small purse. I keep my debit card and some money in the belt, and everything else in the small purse. However, you can easily put lipstick in if you're low-maintenance.
re: Question re: acting my age#38
Posted: 1/20/08 at 11:40pmThe only reason a lot of residents in tourist cities like New York get annoyed by sightseers is that oftentimes tourists forget that they are exploring a place where people actually live. Just stop and think sometimes, "Is what I'm doing disrupting peoples' lives?" The main idea is just "be considerate".

Jane you crack me up....first you say "I get the main idea, Actr. I just don't agree with that idea.
It's ok, each to his own!"
and then in the next post demand to know what things tourists have done, almost sounding like you are trying to justify your stand..(or prove actr wrong, thereby implying there is a right or a wrong)....which is in itself is ridiculous as all Actr (and I for that matter when you pulled the same thing with me) said was to be courteous and respectful.......which is the norm for anyone who is visiting someones home, whether it be a city or an actual building.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I have posted a time or two on this board but have never gotten so many responses.
These quesitons arise for me because one of the things I love to do is strike up conversations with those around me. Specifically, I love to sit at a bar and talk to the bartenders. In May, I had a wonderful covnersation with the bartender at Joshua Tree. He was from Jacksonville, Fla, but had family from near where I live. He was an aspiring comic, and I enjoyed my drinks and meal. I hope he has had good luck. I also had a good time with the bartender at Joe Allen. You're right about not caring about what people think, but I'd really like to meet some locals and some theatre folks while I'm there. I don't particulary need to fit in, but I don't want to stick out.
This really sounds like I need therapy rather than a vacation, but I love theatre - all things related. Alas, I have no talent whatsoever, so I must live vicariously, and I love to chat with those who have the ability and drive to be in NYC pursuing dreams.
Again, thanks for the advice.

Elphaba, I think you're reading a little too much into it. It's really quite simple. I don't agree that tourists must try not to get in anyone's way, and I'd like to know what they do that's so disagreeable. How confusing is that?
I'm pretty secure in my opinions, Elphaba, but I'd like to ask you what is the problem if a person does want to defend an opinion? Most of the posters here object to people posting opinions without backup.
And now I'll ask you what is so disrespectful about tourists visiting NY? Why don't you defend your opinion? Even though you don't live here.

Yes, exactly-I'd like to know what it is that I'm not aware of. Perhaps I'd adjust my opinion.
No, it's not to prove anyone wrong, Elphaba. I asked a question because I wanted to know the answers. Why don't you help me out here?
