Whaaaaaaaat? My goodness.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Wow, this is a shock! RIP.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

He has a daughter who isn't even a year old yet. Very sad news indeed.

I just lost a former co-worker tonight from a heart attack. He was 38. Recently married and moved to Australia (where he was originally from).
Way too young for this to be happening.

I gasped when I saw the headline. Very sad; my thoughts are with his family.

RIP. He really churned out a lot of good projects and scene-stealing supporting roles in Zero Dark Thirty ("We're all smart, Jeremy.") and the woefully underrated films Killing Them Softly and Not Fade Away. He had a project he was doing with Nicole Holofcener that he just completed. A great character actor who became one of the most iconic characters in either film or television in the last 20 years.

...I remember him from over 20 years ago when he was a bartender on 59th and 1st.
He was working off off off Broadway as an actor, and my friend Lisa and I would try to go see his shows to support him, because he was one of the good guys (and as a bartender, always 'topped us off' and kept the drinks flowing when we couldn't really afford to be out all night!)
In the years since, he created one of the most iconic characters in TV history, along with other great turns, large and small, on stage and screen.
Ya done good. Even though you weren't near done.

I certainly wouldn't call myself an intimate friend, but I had the privilege of knowing him personally for over ten years, and he was a truly wonderful man. This is an absolute shock, and he will be missed by so many.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

Addy, I love that story. He was "one of the good ones," definitely.
Thanks to the folks who chimed in about my friend and co-worker. I didn't mean to steal Gandofini's thunder in any way (and who could, I ask you?).
It's just that I was feeling particularly vulnerable already this evening about people who are here one second and gone the next. My friend/co-worker was a gentle soul. Very dedicated to his work (TV production and film). He was always in early and stayed late because of his passion for what he was doing. I was so happy for him when he moved back to Australia about three years ago, and even more happy when he married last year. And at 38, today was his last day on the planet.
Then to read about James Gandolfini, a giant of the small screen. An icon in television history, who was not much older than I am now.
I feel like I'm walking on eggshells. I hope his time in Italy was wonderful and that he left the earth enjoying the beauty and finer things in life.

I can't wrap my head around this news. I'm shocked.
My heart is heavy for his family, especially his 8-month-old daughter who will never know her father. We are lucky to have his presence and talent captured so marvelously on screen.

Lipton: Finally, Jim, if Heaven exists what would you like to have God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
Gandolfini: Take over for awhile, I'll be right back. (laughs)
