This makes me very sad. I'm glad she is in a better place and no longer suffering. Golden Girls will never be the same.

For some reason, I think I remember hearing that she was actually the youngest of the four Golden Girls - does anyone know if that's true?

She was the second youngest. Betty White is the oldest. Followed by Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty and Rue McClanahan.

Sad but fine DG. But it's probably a blessing, considering the state she's been in the past several years.

Whoever posted it, I doubt she's gone to Shady Pines. A Stroke didn't keep her there, and neither will death.

One of my favorite Sofia moments was the episode when Rose made a smelly desert. Rose, Blanche, and Dorothy were in the kitchen, and Rose explained that they had to eat the desert holding their noses; they smell was terrible, but the taste was delicious. Sofia walked into the kitchen as the girls were holding their noses and stated, "Come on, you can't smell that from in here." My second favorite is the episode when Dorothy's gay friend, Jean, comes for a visit and falls in love with Rose. Sofia is at her finest through the entire episode, but the scene in the bedroom with Blanche, Dorothy, and Sofia is the best part of the show. Dorothy and Sofia explaining to Blanche what a lesbian was.....classic. She will be missed!!!

I'm speechless but the last thing I'd want is for a lady like her to suffer so maybe it was for the best. She was a great talent and I hope she gets a decent tribute at the Emmy's- did anyone more important in tvland leave us?? I'm not holding my breath though but it would be nice to bring the other 3 ladies there to salute her.

In UK we still get re-runs of Golden Girls and in my opinion, no one could time a line like Estelle Getty.
A very talented lady. MAY SHE REST IN PEACE.

What a shame that this talented lady only received what seemed like a 5 second mention on GMA and other news programs that I saw.

GYPSY1527- Love it!! That's one of the best lines. Then Blanche tells Sophia and Dorothy not to tell Rose because "she's not as sophisticated as I am." Sophia responds, "That's true. If she found out that Danny Thomas was a lesbian, it would kill her!" Classic....

I just thought of another classic Sophia moment. Tonight on Lifetime, I saw the episode when Dorothy rekindles the flame with one of her ex-lovers. (Jerry Orbach) He calls her on the phone to ask her out, and she replies, "let me check my calendar." She picks up the phone again and replies, "I seem to be free that evening." Sophia and Blanche are standing in the room and Sophia replies, "He must have asked her out this century."
