Am I the only person here who doesn't complain about the amount of money taken out of my paycheck every week?
I truly have no problem with it. I live, eat and party in one of the top two most expensive cities in the US...and yet I get by just fine and dandy. And I don't make a huge income.
And am I the only person here who would gladly have an extra, say, thousand dollars a year taken out of my paycheck in order to help make sure every American has access to affordable healthcare?

These uniform Icons are getting out of hand.
I'm sorry I like Canada and I like most of the Canadians I've known (quite a few)
The only thing Canada has that the US doesn't is televised curling.

Type, minimum wage jobs rarely require their workers to work overtime for that specific reason. Overtime in the US doesn't kick in until after 40 hours. Since McDonalds has their customer buying patterns figured out, they know when to schedule.
For example:
We know we have a breakfast crowd from 7-10am. We'll bring in people from 6-11am which is a 5 hour shift. We only have one customer from 11-Noon, so we only need one person working, etc. Since there are so many people desperate for work in the US we can run people through those 5 hour shifts 7 days a week and still not hit the 40 hour overtime law.

If you want to talk to me about the McDonalds corporation, tell me about the salary packages and benefits of middle-to-upper management - and how they compare percentage-wise with the people actually providing the product/service.

upper/middle management requires training and experience.
a $5.15 and hour job at McD's requires a heartbeat.

As long as people continue to relegate human components to the level of 'drone', then there is no hope - and will forever reflect on our society as one that is dispassionate and ruled by the external forces of materialistic gain.

DGrant, either your copying this stuff from somewhere, or you're to quote Samuel L Jackson from Pulp Fiction "one smart mother ___"
Very eleoquently said, I disagree, but well said.
Problem is there are always going to be "crappy" jobs that have traditionally been the minimum wage jobs. EVERYONE can't have a middle-class income, if so then how can it be the middle?

Rodney - my thoughts are my own - and the most important part of that statement is that they are thoughts at all.
It's fascinating to me that the discussion of proportionate distribution of profit always seems to be viewed in the extreme. It either can't change at all, or it has to be obliterated. Even if you accept that the higher you are in a corporate structure should be reflected in higher earnings, you'ld be hard pressed to justify the HUGE disparity in actual income between the top and bottom of the chain. Simply saying that the structure should be examined doesn't mean advocating for its destruction entirely.

Well said, again.
It's true that the BIG bosses make too much damned money.
I make.. an ok salary. What makes me nuts is that with the cost of living in Chicago, I do a little better than get by. Now if I were trying to support kids, that would be a problem. Now if Kerry raises the minimum wage, I belive as stated earlier, the 'bottom line' will be pushed up. Meanwhile I will be lucky if I see a 2% raise this year. So goods get more expensive, people like me continue to earn the same.

Posted: 10/14/04 at 1:29pmInflation has already happened, so your goods have already started to get more expensive. Meanwhile, the minimum wage hasn't changed since Clinton. That pushes the bottom line down...

Posted: 10/14/04 at 3:17pmOne of the biggest problems is that inflation has gone up over the past 8 years, yet minimum wage has not. People are afraid prices will go up if the minimum wage does as well, yet prices having been going up when minimum wage stays the same, which increases the number of those living at or below the poverty level.

Exactly, MisterMatt. This is where people like EricMCD reply, "Inflation would be EVEN worse if the lowest paid workers made so much as a penny more an hour."
And Eric, come now. I'm a big Terry O'Quinn fan, but not much of a fan of men who play coy.
