Have none of you seen the shirts?
For what it is worth, I did not make up the offensive line.
It is on a famous line of shirts.
However, yes. It is offensive.
Bah, whatever: not at rape.
at SENSITIVITY...
lay back, relax.

No, it matters, NM. When the good guys join in desensitizing the word for people, it's a problem. Rape has been a violent, over-powering, life destroying event for far more women than you will ever know. And parroting idiocy...even in jest... like the phrase from the T-shirt feeds into the mentality that blames the victim, adding insult to injury. You do us all a disservice by making light of the word.
I won't relax on this one, because it matters.

Nugget - I see no reason for anyone to 'lay back and relax' - you have crossed a line, and they have called you on it. Your continued deflection and defensiveness is only serving to reflect on you. And you may not have originated the thought, but by using it, you have given it your apparent approval.
I am reminded of a line from 'Maurice" - "A gentleman would have apologized on instinct." - You, sir, are no gentleman.

nugs,
I assumed(yeah,yeah,Iknow..),when you said "have none of you seen the shirts?" you were referring to your thread title-and so the question,"whose shirts?",y'know,hilfiger,etc...if they're just novelty t-shirts they're hardly famous. Are you enjoying all this attention? Can't imagine why else you're being so adamantly offensive to these people who are clearly upset....

Whoaaaa, guys.
I am not being insensitive to the offended ones.
I know that what was posted was offensive.
And of f*cking course rape is an atrocious happening.
I am sorry that I offended people...
But I also believe that people should not be so sensitive.
How many times have you laughed at a joke, following it with a "that is so horrible!" ?
.....that is the kind that was posted.
Horrible, YES!.
Admittedly.
Repeatedly.

Posted: 10/18/04 at 8:54pmNugget, someone mentioned it as akin to a Matthew Shepard joke. I can't even imagine the pummeling you would take for one of those. Matt_G, would you find that amusing? A Matthew Shepard joke?

I know this issue has been resolved, but I just want to thank Iflit for her comments. Well-spoken, my dear.
Just seeing the word strikes an uncomfortable chord within me...one of the biggest nightmares I can even imagine. I just hope this has been educational for all.

Posted: 10/18/04 at 10:30pmDAvid Mamet is raping my mailbox? This is the epitome of digusting drivel I have seen on this board. I witnessed my roommate being raped at the age of 19. I can't begin to find words to describe the atrocities I witnessed. This is obviously the work of a mindless child in an adult body in deciding to post this thread. It has been 28 years later since her rape.....I still have nightmares about it. Anyone who makes light of this has serious problems.

Posted: 10/18/04 at 10:41pmAny "joke" about rape reveals the mindset of the "joker". I've seen the t-shirt with the joke on it. I wonder what genius thought it would be a good idea to sell those? Being raped damages your soul and it's something very few victims totally recover from. Physical wounds heal, emotional wounds don't always. I am a gay 40 yr old man who was raped by an older guy when I was 13. It still affects my relationships with other men to this day.

Posted: 10/19/04 at 3:20amAnd just another stupid poster to cross off my list of people I will not respond to. So sad. This list gets longer every day. And of course, Mamet has always been known as a writer who is so sensitive to women.

Posted: 10/19/04 at 8:13amI am bumping this up in hopes that more people will read the two first person accounts that illustrate exactly why I, and others, were so sensitive to the original post. The pain behind both of them was palpable. This will, hopefully, have been a learning experience...not just for the original poster... but for anyone else whose reaction to themselves (or via PM) was "why are they making such a big deal about a silly comment..."

Posted: 10/19/04 at 8:19amThe thing that intrigues me is the lack of concern over having offended someone. I certainly understand saying something that triggers something in someone that you didn't intend. But to summarily dismiss someone's reaction seems inappropriate and puts up barriers to civil discourse. Even if I might not regret having said something that offended, I would like to think that I would at least be sensitive enought to be sorry for having caused someone distress - without having to classify their emotion through my own life experience.

Exactly, DGrant.
One needs to be sensitive to other people's issues if they expect others to be sensitive to their concerns.
One also needs to be able to differentiate between posting blindly to a public message board and sharing sentiments or jokes with a group of friends. Different self-editing standards apply to the two situations.

Posted: 10/19/04 at 4:52pmthe anonymity of the internet is a dangerous thing. But I don't think personal diatribes are the answer either. I am sorry for all of those who shared their personal experiences, because that must have been incredibly painful. I'm not trying to discount your pain. But responding to an off-color joke with anger on an anonymous message board is not the answer. As we've all seen in the past, it only enflames the conversation further. Peace out. No more posts from me on this topic. It needs to fade away and never be dragged up again.
