It doesn't seem like it was "allowed":
Schumacher (the actor) changed the play's script at the last minute, the directors of the theater company told Italian newspaper Il Giomo: "The original monologue included a fake gunshot but he eventually decided for the hanging -- without telling us."
It also doesn't appear that the play was in a union situation bunnie3.

You have to wonder if this wasn't an elaborate way to commit suicide. I mean he changed from a fake gunshot to a hanging without telling anyone. That was my first instinct after reading the story anyway.

A Stage Manager friend of mine actually brought up the idea that it may have been a suicide.
