The Hollywood Reporter, via Craig Kennedy, has announced that Nora Ephron will write and direct a Peggy Lee biopic. Reese Witherspoon already secured the rights and may star in the production, »

Now my life is complete...I just hope they do it right.

I also thought it was Miss Piggy.

I remember when "Miss Piggy" was called "Miss Piggy Lee," initially. Henson dropped the "Lee" when the real Peggy Lee wasn't too happy about the association.

I'm not sure how I feel about bubbly Reece Witherspoon playing not-bubbly Peggy Lee. But they totally lost me with "Nora Ephron will write and direct ..."

That's my cue to pass.

Reece Witherspoon has impressed me in appearances on the Graham Norton Show (which you should watch, if you don't already, on BBC-America). She seems to be intelligent, with a wry sense of humor, and a good understanding of the "bubbly" character she became famous for.

She could be surprisingly good as Peggy Lee, especially if the story centers around her early life and doesn't require Reece to wear old-age make-up for a long time. And I actually think Nora Ephron could do it well, with taste and humor and genuine emotion.

Nora Ephron gives me hives. Seriously, I think I'm allergic to her "talent."

I haven't been able to stand anything she's done for over a decade.

EDIT: Closer to two decades, actually.

I'm with Besty on this one. I think that Witherspoon could be very good, but I suspect that Ephron will just miss the boat on this.

And I just can't picture Reece as Peggy, even as the sultry younger band singer with Benny Goodman. Peggy had a maturity and streetwise, world-weariness even at the age of 19.

Reece still hasn't gotten there yet. Good actress, good talent, not so sure if it's a good fit.

EDIT: I do like Reece, though, and I think she could prove me wrong.

Nora, on the other hand, no way. She'd have to become a different person with a different track record first.

I love Peggy Lee, but I have to ask: What exactly did she do that would make this any different from any biopic?

I think Ephron did the best work of her career with the Julia segments of JULIE AND JULIA, but I'm still waiting for her to return to the talent she showed in her fine screenplay for SILKWOOD.

I think it's a better choice than Kristen Chenoweth playing Dusty Springfield. And Jessica Lange playing Patsy Cline.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Totally thought this was Miss Piggy at first. And wow...when did they show that Piggy had nipples?

I'm still laughing about Miss Piggy, I love her...

Anyway, Judy Garland and Peggy Lee were my childhood favorite entertainers so I am very excited about the biopic.

I think the movie will focus on the MUSIC of the 40's and 50's

Peggy was born in 1920 and lost her mother soon after. She had a very abusive step-mother, went through the Depression and became a star in the forties, wrote alot of her own music including "Lady and the Tramp"...even received an Oscar Nomination and got the New York Film Critcs Award for "Petes Kelly Blues"...I think there is lots to say and I hope Nora will write a great script.

Reese still looks like she is a squeaky-clean 18 year old. She has never really topped her perf in ELECTION.

You need an actress who has LIVED and who is a real woman, not some blonde cutie pie to do justice to Ms. Lee. And hack director Nora Ephron is not exactly the right choice to mount this production either.

How about letting the dead rest in peace and not doing the film? Better to release a multi-CD and DVD package on the great lady's music and film appearances.

I hope they film a scene of Reese in old age make up throwing copies of "Lady and the Tramp" off the VHS shelves at Wal-Mart in a boiled rage!

Her work on the 1955 Disney film, Lady and the Tramp (1955) led to a landmark legal judgment 36 years later when a California court awarded her $2.3 million after she sued for a portion of the profits from the videocassette sale of the movie. The case hinged on a clause in her pre-video-era contract barring the sale of "transcriptions" of the movie without her approval.

Freeway was the first movie I saw Reese Witherspoon in and she isn't at all sweet and bubbly in it. She is great though!
