Hi,a community theatre in my hometown is doing a production of Rent and the auditions are coming up in a few months. The theatre says to bring any song from a broadway production and sing it.I'm trying out for the parts of Mimi,Joanne and if they decide to colorblind cast it, maureen.I'm trying to find a song that will best display my range without sounding too classical. The songs I'm trying to decide between are On My Own(from Les miserables) and Mama Who Bore Me(Spring Awakening).any thoughts or suggestions you may have I am very open to it and thankful for.
Between those two? Mama Who Bore Me. On My Own has been done so many times for auditions, and defintely isn't suited for the roles you are auditioning for.
yeah I was thinking the same thing! but what other broadway songs would be good to sing as well?
I would say to not go with either of those songs. Mimi and Maureen are sexy and seducing characters, or something to that extent. Both of those songs I say are too slow. Choose something uptempo. An obvious decision if you want a slower song could be "Come to Your Senses" or something else from Tick Tick Boom also written by Jonathan Larson. "Safe In the City" from Taboo maybe? Broadway version that is. Something from maybe Batboy or Next to Normal, although the latter could be too "popular" as of now.
The more I think about it Safe In the City would be good. Click here to hear it.

"Saturday Night in the City" or "Let Me Come Home" from THE WEDDING SINGER.
"It Won't Be Long Now" from In the Heights is a very Mimi-ish song I'd say.

maybe "my strongest suit" from Aida. Idina menzel originally sang it on broadway and it very maureenish
