When I went to stay with a friend's grandparents in Philly one summer, one of the highlights of my trip was a trip to Rita's Water Ice...mmm...so good.
Nobody makes better Italian Ices than in Philadelphia, and Rita's is one of the best. If you've had a water ice, you'd know that. And, it's absolutely nothing like an gelato. It's far more refreshing than those.
Well, I live in Virginia, and I can't get one, either. Although, I was just in Philadelphia on Saturday, and I had a delicious soft pretzel and a lemon water ice. The best food on earth!
Checking in from Langhorne, PA! Rita's is definitely the best around--and there are so many, two! We have one in each of the two local malls, one ACROSS from the one mall with a Dunkin' Donuts and one across from the bowling alley. If we don't find flavors we like, we can just take a 5-10 min drive to the next one...it's great!
My favorite flavor is the fudge brownie. I always get the gelati, because water ice tastes even better when mixed with custard, IMO. I also love the cherry because it's made fresh with real fruits. My sister worked there a couple of summers ago and says that anything where you taste 'chunks' is real and fresh and was made that day in the store. The reason the flavors vary from day to day is because the people who work there have made whatever they felt like making for the day. Also, I haven't tried it because I HATE banana, but my dad loved that new banana split flavor or whatever it's called...it had all of these different fruits in it.
Also, SweetQintheLights--I don't know where in FL you go to school, but I just graduated from the University of Tampa this past May. Whenever I would complain that we needed a Rita's around the area, I would hear rumors of one being located somewhere over in Clearwater. I haven't been there myself. Oh, but I've missed my water ice!!
Mmmm...I have been a Rita's addict for almost 8 years now. They have like 6 of them here in Pittsburgh. My favorite is the Mango. I love their Misto Shakes too, which is basically their "gelati" mixed with the ice. They're like milkshakes. So good. Especially the mango ones, or the creme ice flavors (Orange Creme, Mint Chocolate Chip, Cookies and Cream is my favorite Misto Shake). Basically anything you get there is good. If they have both Chocolate and Vanilla flavored ices, try getting half-chocolate, half-vanilla. It's really really good.

SingingWendy--I have that song stuck in my head now! *growls at you*
SweetQintheLights--Oxford Valley is one of the malls I was referring to, haha! The other was Neshaminy (that one has one instead and one outside with a Dunkin' Donuts).
Did you go to Neshaminy High School? I live in Langhorne and that's where I went to school (in fact, you could walk there from my house!)
I've never tried Rita's. Although my friends swear by it, King of Corona in Queens is too sweet for me--and they don't let you mix flavors. I usually go to Ralph's, where I mix the chocolate and coconut.
Baine- No, My mailing addres is Langhorne but I 'technically' live in Holland. I would have gone to Council Rock but I went to a private school on the main line. Are you out of HS? When did you graduate? Are you in college?
I MAY know some people you graduated with.
