Roaches-raison d'etre?

We all know that the creatures of the earth were put here with a function. Some insects destroy other insects which are harmful to the environment. But dear Lord, why ROACHES? Any biologists here?

Oh my god they are the best cat toys ever! A mouse only lasts a half dozen pounces or so, but roaches keep running for hours!

Some movie I saw recently had a voice over of how roaches ARE the top of the evolutionary chain... they live everywhere, can survive for weeks - I think - without their head, and will survive a noocular holocaust. Most evolved creature.

thanks so much for that closeup, Calvin! Every year, I get one or two of those HUGE waterbug type of roach that you don't even want to kill because of the sound of the carnage crunch!
