It's almost exactly like Upstairs, Downstairs but bigger and broodier.

And it has Maggie Smith dropping bon mots all over the place and pretty much stealing every scene she's in.

Carlos, this really doesn't have anything to do with having a 'gay card'. It's television programming that has appealed to young and old, male and female and folks of all types around the world.

It's simply brilliantly written and performed and you will truly care about the characters.

Nothing against having a 'gay card', but... just watch the show because you're interested in a beautiful story.

And much faster paced. It is soap opera--very very well done soap opera--but also very quickly paced (which is why it was so idiotic that for season 1 PBS was worried Americans would find it too slow and chopped up a bunch of episodes--they're uncut on the US DVDs, though).

THe irony too is one of the creators of U/D was mad that Downton premiered a year before the Upstairs/Downstairs reboot (as was BBC apparently, but they passed on Downton letting ITV get it). But the Upstairs Downstairs reboot, while it had promise, just wasn't all that good--and died after two very short seasons.

(I'm surprised that American pilot, I think it was called Gilded Lillies, that was made as an American Downton wasn't picked up, but maybe the networks remembered their lesson from BEacon Hill, the hugely expensive, flop American Upstairs Downstairs attempted in the 70s.)

I had little doubt it would be a big hit for PBS, but as much as I've loved it since the first UK airing, I admit I'm pretty shocked to see quite the phenom it's be3come--articles *everywhere*, parodies on shows like Jimmy Fallon, etc.

Have loved James-Collier since his stint on Coronation Street. I like less than perfect teeth (well, within reason...)

I haven't started watching yet - - - I'm going to start on Saturday via Amazon Prime. They have the first 3 seasons. Netflix only has Season 1 available to stream.

I don't watch this (unless something particularly gruesome is about to happen, as is likely for Michael Le Vell's character) so have only seen the extracts of him on YouTube. His teeth were whiter then than they are now.

Perfectly straight, brilliantly white teeth always look so, well, artificial.

Carlos, you'll find that only seasons 1 & 2 are free on Amazon Prime. Season 3 is $1.99 or $2.99 per episode, depending on whether you wand HD or not. But you can watch season 3 for free on the PBS website... http://video.pbs.org/program/masterpiece/
