I'm pissed that Altman opted not to shoot Matthew Modine's planned full frontal. Apparenly, Modine was game but Altman ultimately dicided against it. But we do get nice shots of Julianne Moore, which I would appreciate all the more if I were straight.

Because, after all, all films are necessarily infinitely better if they include full frontal nudity.
Huh?
SM2, I think you are thinking of Short Cuts, another great Altman film. Both are brilliant, but Moore's cootchie is seen in Short Cuts.

Maybe not infinitely better with nudity but they do have their moments. Except for that Kathy Bates movie a few years back :)
Oh yeah, SueleenGay. Sorry about that. kjklo, whether a movie contains nudity or not does not determine my appreciation for it. When I first saw GODS & MONSTERS back when it was released, I thought it was a great movie. But years later when I learned that Brendan Fraser was originally supposed to go full frontal, I felt cheated somehow. It would have been nice (for me, at least) had they kept it, but it didn't change my love for the movie. jimnysf (this time I remembered the "f"), thanks for the laugh. I didn't need to see Harvey Keitel either. Ever.

Kathy Bates' scene in ABOUT SCHMIDT wasn't gratuitous at all...

Back to the movie at hand- I love "The Player" for many reasons, one of the more obscure being that he managed to fit Malcolm and Andie MacDowell in the same scene and make reference to it.

The opening scene has made my nape hairs pop off and stab people in the eye.
I don't think s/he was implying it was gratuitous, just not flattering.

The opening tracking shot alone was better than many complete movies.
I loved seeing Joan Tewkesbury on screen.
Love this movie! One of my faves from '92.

Rewatched it today.
Dear God, what an absolutely perfect film.
The camera angles in the opening scene literally moved me to tears.
Count me in, loved the film. Haven't seen it for years though, and now I will do so.

I've noticed that Tim Robbins has never really been in a completely ****ty film. War of the Worlds is probably the worst performance he ever gave, but the movie as a whole is somewhat decent and not at all awful.
excellent point. Have you seen his performance in "Miss Firecracker"?

Don't forget his cameo as the PBS newsman in ANCHORMAN.
kjklo---Yeah, I always liked "The Sound of Music" better before they cut the nude scene, too.
I love "The Player!"
Not since "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" have I enjoyed counting cameos quite so much.
whoopie's best performance, IMO.
I've noticed that Tim Robbins has never really been in a completely ****ty film.
I like Tim Robbins (and I love Altman), but I thought Ready to Wear was an absolute mess.

bump.
best.....movie......ever.
Richard E. Grant's movie pitch is one of the greatest movie moments ever, right up there with the ending of Pootie Tang

And his Hitler hair! ( supposedly a serendipitous decison, if u beleive his diaries - which I do!)
Also a nice performance from Gallagher too.

I did like this movie. There is a sequel to the original novel it's based on out now.
I wish they would put this out on dvd already!
