I just read the CNN newslink about President Reagan passing away. I instantly recalled the speech in "Angels in America" that Joe makes to Harper about how President Reagan had changed America and made it okay to be proud to be an American. It's the scene where he's trying to explain to her why he wants to go to Washington, DC. (They're in the bedroom, he's getting undressed etc.)
Anyhow...that was my first reaction as I read the newsstory about how his presidency had changed America.
And then I thought of Louis and Joe on the Bench outside the courthouse, and on the beach and their discussions about Reagan.
I wonder what Tony Kusnher might have to say right now...
(I think it is amazing how some theatre productions and/or movies can so strongly effect with how you receive news, etc.)

Sad news...is it normal to fear death, for you and for others?
What a photo op for Bush! All those world leaders & NO expectations of any trade agreements or anything! A good Republican party man right to the end! Now THAT'S conviction!
My mother always told me if I don't have anything nice to say...
Why is this breaking news? He was 93 Im sure everyone was expecting it.

Cuz he was a former president...and it'll be a state funeral...and dignataries will visit from all over...and the newshounds need to discuss something besides Smarty Jones and Iraq.

Larry Kramer's one personal wish? "That I outlive Ronald Reagan".
Larry did it! Ha HA!

And I dug right down to the bottom of my soul.
And cried.
'Cause I felt nothing.

I am sorry...you might not have like Ronald very much (I didn't either), but when someone dies, you have to feel something! C'mon! That is almost like wishing someone to die, or laughing at a funeral. There were people who cared about it, such as his family, and you should be thinking about them.

Uh, that was a quote from A Chorus Line, BWT11. And no, I'm sorry, I absolutely feel nothing. Not happy. Not sad. Not moved in the least. Not for Nancy, or Ron Jr. or Michael or Little Orphan Patty. The Children of the Zeitgeist. It's finally Mourning in America. But I feel absolutely nothing.
I think I'll run outside and see if there is a piercing point of green light somewhere in the night sky.
If anything, I'm glad Reagan died to please Kramer.

The man was 93 and hasn't known his own name for the last decade or so. My guess is that it is a huge relief for his family that he is finally "at peace".
And analyitically, let me say that its fortunate that he died before the convention. The Republicans can now spend their four days memorializing him. It would have been a disaster for the Democrats had he died right before the election.

I was thinking the same thing. Watching the news reports tonight, they made it seem as if republicans can actually handle domestic issues. That misconception would NOT be good for the country.
PS- I say good for the "country" because another 4 years of Bush is clearly terrible for the nation.
He was president when I was born. I only vaguely remember him being president at all. But still, it's kinda sad and weird that someone who was president during my lifetime has died. (Obviously a first, as the Bush Sandwich is still living.)
I am glad that President Reagan's suffering has come to an end. He was an inspiration to many, on several levels.
Please do not politicize this thread. If you do not respect the man's legacy, at least show respect for a human life come to an end. May he rest in peace.
and may millions of others who are have died, are dying or will die due this horrible human being rest in peace also.
Sometimes it's not even worth it.
I updated the post, because I don't want to start this.
I tried to do it before you posted, but was too late.
For those of you who wonder, I called Matt a jerk, because I was upset that he chose to state his hateful opinion. But he is right, it's an opinion.
Now Now. No need for name calling. I was expressing an opinion, the same as you were. That's what we do here. People have different opinions on different matters and we share them here. If you disagree, you can simply say that.
I usually have the class to let the body cool before calling them things like "hateful human being". It's a nice thing to do. Our culture still has some reverence for our departed, regardless of whom it is.
Or so I thought.
I am never political, nor state controversial beliefs on the site for fear of being flames. But, please...a little respect for the dead? Even if it doesn't upset you, you are surely capable of a momenta of silence before tearing the event apart. I'm sorry to offend anyone, but I had to get this off my chest.
