They are now stating that the explanation for Samantha's absence is she is no longer friends with the other women. "The friendships you had in your thirties are not necessarily the same friendships you have in your fifties". It was ridiculous when the writers of " Mary and Rhoda" stated they didn't speak to each other for twenty years and now this is just as ridiculous.

I think it's perfect. I mean, it was ridiculous that Mary and Rhoda had lost touch, but I could see none of the three remaining ever talking to Samantha. I just wonder if Kim has weighed in?
Also, I LOVE the idea of Vanessa Williams as a new cougar. (I know that's a misogynist construct but I couldn't think of another way to put it. A woman of insatiable appetite?)

I think it's interesting that some people don't understand that most relationships in life are not permanent and sometimes people grow apart, even after their 30s. It makes perfect sense they wouldn't be friends with Samantha since she lives on the West Coast and doesn't have a family. Charlotte and Miranda are busy with their children and Carrie will never leave New York City. Sound perfectly reasonable to me.
Kim has nothing to do with the project so I doubt she weighed in.

Do we know that Samantha still lives on the West Coast? Once she parted ways with Smith, she could have easily moved back to NY. Carrie and Samantha not having kids, would keep them even closer, since they had that in common compared to the other two. I agree that friendships/relationships in real life are not permanent and grow apart. But these are sitcom relationships that we are talking about. For the entire series and two movies, the audience was told that the friendships of these four women would always be a strong bond and nothing would break that bond.

We were told that over and over again. But, real life sometimes gets in the way of sitcom relationships, which is what happened here. Kim wanted no part in this project for various reasons, but they still wanted to give us this new show. So, what should they do? There was a suggestion of her dying but I think that would put a cloud over the show going forward. Your thoughts?

I wouldn't have wanted them to kill off the character. I would have accepted a recast or even something as drastic that she fell in love and moved to Europe. For a real life explanation it does make sense to say they are no longer friends, especially considering the real life circumstances. And it could be a subliminal FU to her from SJP. But for the fan, it doesn't make sense for the sitcom characters. That is why I mentioned the tv movie of Mary & Rhoda. The audience was told that these two best friends had a falling out that lasted 20 years. During TMTMS and Rhoda, Mary and Rhoda couldn't stay mad at each other for 48 hours, must less to not talk to each other, all those years, about marriages and births of daughters., just wasn't plausible for a fan of the show.

FYI, the original series has been remastered in HD for HBO Max, and the results are really impressive. Since it originally aired in SD, the film image was cropped, so, now, it fills the screen of a 16:9 television with more picture on the sides. It looks so good that I started to watch it again from the beginning.

I can't think of anybody off the top of my head. Kim played Samantha with so many layers. Sure, she loved sex, but she was also caring, giving, supportive and unashamed of who she was. That is why I would have accepted a recast vs the killing off of the character. It would take an actress who should be sexy but also be able to emote all of the characteristics that make up Samantha.

For me, whenever they recast a character on a show, it's just so jarring. I have never watched soap operas but I hear they recast those all the time. It's like "Wait....are we not supposed to notice?". On Fresh Prince when they recast Aunt Viv, it was never talked about. So, I just would find it strange but if they did it correctly, I think they could get away with it. I like your description of Samantha, absolutely spot on.

I might be in the minority, but I don't want to see a rehash of the original series. It can never be what it was, and, clearly, they don't want it to be. There's a reason they're not calling it Sex and the City, and I'm looking forward to something different with these characters.

It’s not a sitcom though and the show never treated it’s relationships that way.

Kim Cattrall WAS the Sex in Sex and The City. I think it's a mistake to rehash it without her. As someone else stated, her Samantha was very layered for a sitcom, and she really was perfect. I just can't imagine the dynamic being the same without her. After the second movie, I think they should just let this series die. I'm all for a show about divorced women in their 50's, but does it have to be a reboot of this one? I just can't imagine it being any good (will I watch anyway? 100%).

Then don't watch it. And no one said any of the women would be divorced. David is in negotiations to be in the series but considering his main role on Chicago Fire, that might be tough. I hope Evan is back, as he is a perfect spouse for Charlotte. And Chris implied Page Six is full of it, which is usually is.
You can have a show focusing on women in their 50s and not have to included their spouses much. They were always secondary characters anyway. This will probably be a huge success even though it's not needed in any way.

This is just freaking pathetic -lol. In a city full of diversity like NYC, it takes these women until they are in their 50's to actually have a friendship or acquaintance that is not white. I guess it was OK for Samantha to f*** a male person of color but never be friends with one. My goodness, how did somebody like you watch such a racist show - OMG.

Mario Cantone, Willie Garson, David Eigenberg, and Evan Handler are all returning to the series. So, with the exception of Kim Cattrall, pretty much everyone else is back. Exciting!
