Most of that was just painful --
But I have to admit I laughed at the yoga sketch late in the show.
I glanced at the screen a bit by then and must have missed the humor in that one.

aw, I thought that this thread was going to be about Rihanna Performing...
I would love to see her perform that song live.
...I didn't catch SNL, but I wish I had. I can't imagine sketches that are worse than most of the ones on other episodes this season.

Really? I fell asleep way before it started last night and my brother told me it was the best one of the season... This might be because he finds anything funny...
How do they get people like Steve Martin and Tom Hanks to come back? Do they not watch the show anymore? Or is it just so they can boost the number of times they've hosted?
I caught about half of it and I loved a lot of the skits I saw. It's lowbrow, deal with it.
I don't mind lowbrow as long as it's funny.

Actually, of all the SNL episodes I've watched this season, I thought it was one of the funnier ones. I didn't especially enjoy the "Ma! Ma!" skit but other wise it was enjoyable. Not hilarious, but definitely laughable. Anyway, that was just my take on it. For the most part this has not been SNL's best season.
Oh lord don't get me started after Ana and Will left the show went completley to sh*t and this is from someone who really loved the show. I will admit that yes about once a show they have a skit that makes you slightly chuckle but to sit through the whole show for ONE skit and some shows don't even have that...I just stopped watching adn its sad because that cast...particularly the women are way too talented for the s***ty writing they are given...it's sad.

Rath, at what point did my excerpt suggest that somehow Amy Poehler didn't have an interest in the show? I thought it was a well-formed question and an insightful answer from a member of the current cast. And, if in fact you are suggesting that I have an vested interest in SNL, please inform me and the rest of the class of your keen insight. But I warn you, you're traipsing back towards "Maureen McGovern was a hugely popular singer who sold millions of records and was at the top of the charts in the '70s" territory again. It's always hilarious to see you do that, but I thought I'd give you fair warning not to make a fool of yourself again.
Personally, I make an intellectual connection between my laughter, and thinking things are funny. It's a nutty formula, but it works for me in assessing comedy. Did a comedy bit make me laugh? It did? It's succesful comedy.
I laughed during the monologue, especially at the end. I always laugh at the Caitlan sketches because they are obviously a tribute to Gilda's Judy Miller character, and a fine evolution of the form. Also, I write the Caitlin sketches with Amy. I laughed all through the 1991 SNL Digital Short with the Right Said Fred parody. The highlights of Weekend Update for me were the "Rosie O'Donnell joins The View" bit and the Patrick Kennedy joke. The yoga sketch made me laugh, "Do you have any towels or, like, a hairdryer?" I thought the Sanford & Son parody with Colin and Michael Powell went from clever to inspired when Condoleeza came in in the Aunt Esther role. And of course the Chili Peppers are more deranged than Rathnait on a nostalgia bender during a hypoglycemic low. Except, you know, likable.

i like SCTV sooooo much better than SNL
even the old SNLs i loved growing up seem tedious now, but old SCTVs still seem fresh & clever!

I didn't think it was that bad last night. I agree with namo on this. if it makes me laugh, then it's successful. I thought the Wheel of fortune sketch was a huge rip off of the Jeopardy parodies, but it was hilarious.
writing comedy is hard, and keeping it fresh every week is harder, and directing a sketch in 3 days is harder, and so on. it is a hard show to do and I don't think it gets the credit it deserves. yes, some sketches, a larger amount than usual of late, have been stinkers, but I still enjoy watching it, and always laugh every week at something.
I wish Lorne Michael would just swallow his pride already and make the show an hour long. It's stretched WAY too thin - has been for years, and skits go on way too long. Trimming a half hour would do wonders.
Namo, I never said you implied that Poehler didn't have a vested interest.
And really, the McGovern thing is beyond old now - find something else to discredit me with this week.
The reason I believe you may well have vested interest in SNL is that you pride yourself on your sophisticated and clever taste, yet you vehemently defend this show from week to week, when it is clear that it has lost its touch these past two seasons.
I feel like every year people say it is past its prime and not funny anymore. I remember even during the Cheri Oteri, Ferrell(sp?), Molly Shannon, Ana Gasteyer years people said it was unfunny when I think looking back we remember many of these characters. The cast is extremely funny and the skits have always been hit and miss. I always get a good laugh during the show.
