No, but it was one of the least gay movie musicals of all time. Even the character of Max was mostly de-gayed for the big screen. It fits into the R&H thesis I raised earlier.

I have to say I always thought Max was pretty gay in the film version, even before I was fully aware of what gay meant.

Just watched the clip. He was terrific.

I doubt it will scare anyone away from the seeing the movie who wanted to see the movie. So what if it's gay? Liking the Supremes and disco was gay too.

The marketing has been brilliant. They WANT gay men to see the movie, just as they want black twentysomethings to see it. Now they want the white girls who made Brokeback a financial success to see it. Good for them and for us and for everyone who sees it.

And as for this current worry on BroadwayWorld that musicals are TOO gay, I just say, you can kiss my TOO-GAY ASS. Musicals have been faggy since the Floradora Girls.

Pal Joey...Disco was gay? I was really into disco. And I like musicals, Barbra, Bette, etc. I wonder if that makes me gay? No wonder my family was suspicious.

Oops. I forgot to add Cher to my list. I like her, too. And between my list, my love of musicals, Mario Lopez, and all things "Passions" including my avatar, I guess I have a few things to come to terms with. Perhaps I may have to go to one of the local Beer Busts to do some more research.

Um . . . I am straight guy and I LOVED "Dreamgirls." And when I went and saw the movie, there were men there with their wives having a blast. I could care less if musicals are seen as "only for gay men." If people want to see a movie, they will see a movie, no matter how it is preceived. And the African American community are coming in droves because they finally have a movie with black stars, and story about black people that appeal to the masses and are taken seriously. If people want to say, "this movie is only for the gays," then you need to look at the demographics of who is going to see the movie. Yes, a lot of gay men are, but there are just as many straight males (mostly black) seeing it as well.

I don't think straight men who like musicals are in denial. I think they're in denial if they don't understand why liking those things as a straight man makes them an anomaly.

I can't imagine there are any straight guys who like musicals who don't realize that they're out of norm. All it takes is one "hey, did you see Candide on PBS last night?" to get a strange look from your buddies watching the Giants game for you to realize it's not something everyone does. Though, if you ask me, football is FAR gayer than musicals - so go figure...

Beware of itunes, I went on there last and saw that you can download episodes of SNL (new to me this part of itunes), it say Jake monologue is included, so I download it. Turns out it fades to black right before he starts singing. So pissed. Luckily it was a funny episode, but I was annoyed - so buyer beware, folks.
