A friend of mine is a student and a part-time EMT. He is an undergrad theatre major and 24 years old. He delayed going to college in order to save enough money in order to afford it. He's an RA, very talented, and one of the hardest-working people I know. And, he doesn't have insurance.
He's very very ill right now. The flu is going around which has sent several of our theatre majors to Urgent Care, including me. He has tried a lot of different kinds of over-the-counter medicines but he has been ill for a week and hasn't gotten much better.
Universal health care, please.

Yeah, once you have the flu, it's too late to take drugs such as tamiflu and such. Viral infections are a bear because you just have to ride them out and take the advice of the other posters. I make a killer homemade chicken matzo ball soup- wish I could send it to your friend. mom
i had surgery on december 19th.
i was catheterized. i got a UTI that turned into a kidney infection.
i have had a fever every day since then.
we have been to the ER six times since christmas.
i was admitted once, and discharged too soon.
accourding to my primary care doctor, i still have an infection. i had a possitive culture last night.
i have been in agony all day.
because of an intestinal condition, i can not take oral pain medication or antibiotics, i need to be admitted and get them through an IV.
i can't get readmited to the hospital beacuse my insurence says my fever is not high enough.
it's 100.4 aetna says it needs to be 101
my normal temperature is not 98.6 it's 97.4
100.4 is very high for me. but my insurence put the cut off at 101.
how about health care that realized that not everyone is "everage" and fits into some nice little cookie cutter.
how about health care that gives a damn and actually helps people who need it?

Abba, let's hope that we elect a president who can remedy major cases like yours and minor cases like my friend's.
i just wish my insurence company would pull their heads out of their asses.
I had a doctor once who actually faked my blood pressure reading so I could stay in hospital an extra day that he knew I needed but that the insurance company would have otherwise denied. There's something terribly wrong with a system where that kind of thing has to happen.
