I happened to catch this movie this afternoon. I have seen it several times and absolutely LOVE it every time. Ellen Burstyn is pure perfection in this movie. She is so beautiful. Alan Alda was fantastic as well and their chemistry- wow! It as totally made my day!

* has totally made my day. Also- did anyone on this board see Ellen perform this role on Broadway?

I've only ever seen the movie--a long time ago and, in fact, with my own (supportive) mom. I loved it.

A great blend of laughter and tears, as I recall. I need to see it again.

I saw this a few years ago because I love the Marvin Hamlisch theme song (The Last Time I Felt Like This).

Such a wonderful film (and, I'm assuming, play).
Double feature it with The Four Seasons for an afternoon of 70s romantic comedy/dramas at their best.

Favorite line:

Alan Alda (on his erectile dysfunction) - "Being an accountant I always thought my eyes would be the first thing to go."

I haven't seen this movie in YEARS. I used to catch it way back in the day on HBO. I do remember liking it very much. I think it's time to re-visit it.

Trivia: Bernard Slade, who wrote this as well as ROMANTIC COMEDY and TRIBUTE developed the television series "The Flying Nun" and "Bridget Loves Bernie" and created "The Partridge Family" and "Love on a Rooftop".

AND it's almost completely faithful to the play~ proof you can "open up" a show without changing a thing.

I'm curious as to what the musical version coming up would be like

Ellen Burstyn was great. I never bought that Alan Alda was a man a woman wanted to go back to year after year.

Yeah, what is it about Alan Alda?

In THE MEPHISTO WALTZ you have not one but TWO incredibly beautiful women: Jacqueline Bissett and Barbara Parkins vying for his affections. I didn't buy it.

Wow! I'm loving all of your thoughts and trivia! The movie is available on netflix but it's not streaming (I really wish they would stream more movies!) I read up on Ellen Burstyn and didn't realize the troubles she had with her ex-husband and how he had schizophrenia and how he raped her and how he commited suicide. I'll have to look into her book now too! I think Alan Alda is a wonderful actor and I believe the two characters in the movie really complemented each other. (Women like Alan Alda because of his sensitivity and intelligence and he's a totally devoted family man! All of these are turn-ons!- well they are to me) It's definitely Ellen's movie. She looked much younger than her age- such beautiful skin. She's such a natural actor!

Thanks supportivemom, I like your perspective regarding Alda. I can totally see it from your POV. He *is* a wonderful actor. Burstyn is still a very beautiful woman, although I wasn't a big fan of that short hair she wore in THE EXORCIST and ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE. She was beautiful in THE LAST PICTURE SHOW.

Tazber, was the instrumental music that played during the change of years, the same music as the theme song? I always loved this music when I would watch the film. Is was especially moving late in the movie. I don't want to give away anything, but you probally know where I am talking about.

I thought the music was perfect for the movie. It brought tears to my eyes- along with the wonderful performances and writing. I wonder how many of the young folk will get the cutural references!

I don't even remember the context, but I remember the line "She peed on the carpet" put me into hysterics.

I need to rewatch this ASAP.

I'm not a woman, but I'd go back year after year to meet Alan Alda if he asked me.

I saw the play on stage with Cloris Leachman and Richard Schaal (then Valerie Harper's husband). The evening's primary appeal lies in watching two actors age a couple of decades in 2 hours, something that doesn't quite work in the movie.

This isn't to say the film is bad, just that the raison d'etre of the play is lost. Films are more epic in nature and we expect aging and other tricks from actors, makeup artists and the like.

P.S. In person and in rehearsal, Leachman wasn't that different from the "flaky old lady" she plays now, 40 years later. But in performance, she was rock solid and very good.

Gaveston- what an interesting cast. I think Cloris Leachman is a very accomplished actress and I would have loved to have seen her take on this. Richard Schaal was a very good comic actor as well. To me, because Burstyn was just so engaging, I totally bought the transformations without all the make-up tricks. The transformations were seen in how she carried herself and how she spoke. Of course, I have never seen it on stage. Anyway, thanks for your input!

Saw it a few months ago with a great p, fresh transfer on some movie network without commercials, and was surprised how well it held up. Nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned charmer.

There's talk of a remake. Not so confident of that.

If they do a remake- who would they even cast? I'd have to think about that! Burstyn is really hard to beat!

She peed on the carpet.

She did what?
Well, not right away.
First, she started to laugh.
Her face was all screwed up. She was holding her sides.
Tears were streaming down her cheeks. And then she peed all over the carpet.

What did you say?

I said, "You'll have to excuse my wife.
Ever since her last pregnancy, she's had a problem. "
Then I offered to have the rug cleaned.

Did that help?

No. They said they had a maid, and it wouldn't be necessary.
You think this is funny? Listen.

I've been meaning to tell you this for a long time.
I just love Helen.

Yes, that.

My mother, one of the world's great laughers, nearly peed herself. It's one of my treasured memories.

Of course, you're talking about something that is a mere movie. The original stage production was bliss--especially when Loretta Sit and Ted Bessell took over the two roles. Theatrical magic!
