In the early 1980's, Alan Alda and Phil Donahue were the poster children for the "sensitive, intellectual man" that women seemed to want. There was a sort of pop culture war between "macho" men and "sensitive" men.
Remember the book, "Real Men Don't Eat Quiche"? Alda was the "real man's" definition of a "quiche eater".

Trivia. This song by Paul McCartney was recorded as the title track for the film Same Time Next Year in 1978. The number was rejected in favor of 'The Last Time I Felt Like This' by Marvin Hamlisch, because it was said that Paul's song gave away too much of the plot.

I love the tag and I wish they had gone with this song which remains officially unreleased to this day.

Posted: 2/25/13 at 6:31pmI really enjoy this movie, but I can't remember the last time I watched it - I think it's been a while. I've been humming the music all day, so I think I'll have to rewatch it soon. I have to admit, though, that while I would like to have coffee with Alan Alda once a year and catch up (because I'm a big fan), I really just don't find him to have much sex appeal at all (except maybe a little as Hawkeye Pierce in the beginning of M*A*S*H). It's weird, because I really do like him, but I guess I like my sensitive and intellectual men to have a little more of an edge or something.

This is exciting.
I'm hoping that with Phylicia Rashad's involvement it will come to Broadway.

You have a point they may be a bit older if the play is unchanged, but they may revise and update the text. Maybe they won't start so young. Kenny Leon's company did a fantastic job revising Guess Who's Coming To Dinner last year. It should have moved onto Broadway.

Saw the stage play many, many years ago. It starred Wayne Rogers and Barbara Eden. I loved it and later saw the movie and loved it, too! The theme song is beautiful and I thought the montages that they used between each year(s) to show the passage of time were moving.
Found the below link on Youtube. (Johnny Mathis and Marvin Hamlisch....what a combo). The singing starts around 2:22 and this clip includes the montages. Check out around 6:40...the somber montage...Johnny singing, "dreams make promises they can't keep..."...just haunting!

I hope this show is brought back to Broadway.

I love this film, especially Burstyn, and would love to see a good production on stage.
I'll only add to the lovely music and title song that it also features one of my favorite vocalists, Jane Olivor. She and Mathis made magic.
