I think the most sarcastic people usually can read it. I can.
Unless, of course, everyone really does hate me and in which case I feel like an ass now.
Wait.
Am I safe to assume that pony threads are a no-no now-a-days?
The literal definition of the word from which sarcasm is derived means "tearing of the flesh".
I'm with you Bobby, I have no idea how people could think McKay was serious. My only theory is that those people were raised not to find the humor in situations.
I think sarcasm comes with life experience. Sooner or later, most truly smart people realize that the only way to deal with tragic or unfair situations is to be sarcastic about them. McKay probably doesn't love doing press lines and that was her way of dealing with it, so she didn't go mad by days end. I mean, do reporters really give a crap what you have to say? Not really.

Sarcasm is the way I tell people what I think of them. And they think I'm joking.
And they laugh.
And everyone's happy.
McCay's brilliance is her believability. Beyond deadpan. Some people just didn't get it though.. but really, did those people think an actor would say that and mean it anyway? Not at this point in time. And not out loud.
Exactly, BSo, it's a way of telling people what you really think without having to take responsibility for what you are saying because by adding a line like "I'm just kidding" you get away with it and hopefully don't make anyone angry.
I see, so you tell people what you think of them. I'm assuming you aren't being kind, because then you end it by saying that you're kidding. Do you think you're getting away with it each time? Do you really think that each person you do this to is believing you?

Yes, they do.
And I never end with "Just Kidding"
That would ruin it.
And you can ask some people around here who have been witness!
Hey, if you want to hang out with me after I told you how I feel...fine.
Jane2, I don't really do this myself at least not on purpose but I do think a lot of people do use sarcasm to mask how they really feel. Overused sarcasm gets old pretty quickly though.
Bwayaddict,I haven't come across such a situation myself, but it sounds just charming.
Oh, only kidding! NOT

That's what I'm saying.
The person using sarcasm is made content they spoke there true feelings.
The other person thinks they heard a joke, and laugh. And laughter makes people happy.
Right, Jane. You self-righteous bitch.
(Just kidding...no, I really am!)
anyone who ends sarcasm or insult with "just kidding"....is
just lying.....
I work with high school level kids and I think sarcasm is especially common at that age because they haven't developed more mature ways of relating.
BSo-You BETTER be kidding if you know what's good for you!!! just kidding.
Seriously though, if someone gave me a deadpan delivery of what they thought of me, and it wasn't complimentary, I'd probably answer them in the same deadpan delivery with a funny remark. Everyone is happy. However, there'd always be that doubt in my mind whether they meant it or not. And I'm not so sure I'd be too willing to hang around them much.

Well, I also know that the person I say it to is too stupid to figure out a pineapple from an orange.

I don't understand how people don't get sarcasm at all. Of course I am a very sarcastic person (heck everyone in my family is).
