Saying Good Bye

OK, 18 months ago I rescued a geriatic stray dog that was abandoned in a vacant lot on 191 st street in Mahattan. He had health issuse and some weird allergy that left his face look burnt. I rescued him on the day he was to be put down at Animal Control.
He has been such a joy, a goofy old man pomeranian, that has filled my and everyone in else inmy shops hearts with laughter and love. Discovered today he has a baseball sized mass in his stomach which is believed to be cancer.It is shutting down his bodily functions.Because of his age (believed to be 15-17) surgery is not an option. He will be put to sleep tomorrow here at home at 11 :30 AM.
Saying good bye is so fcuking hard, but it is only the humane way as he can no longer walk or eat.
I love you Codger! I will hold you and kiss you as you exit this world!

Oh, SNAFU, I'm so sorry to hear it. I remember you mentioning him after you took him, and I always thought it was a wonderful thing you did. He was lucky to have found you and I'm sure you and he both know that.

You have done such a great thing by giving him a quality of life for the last year and a half that he would never have had. You're his hero. And mine too.

It is a part of the contract we sign when we rescue, adopt these seniors. They teach us invaluable lessons in love! I don't know how I can repay Codger!

Oh, Snafu, I am so sorry to hear about this. Please know my thoughts are with you

Snafu, I am so sorry. But, I am so happy that you were able to bring joy to each other! I know it is sappy, but when I have lost a four-legged family member, the Rainbow Bridge helped...

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

Just reading this for some reason put the Muppets song from Take Manhattan in my head. Maybe it's because I associate you with puppets--and I find the song very sad.

Anyway--I know how hard it is to do this--all my sympathies.

That was exactly what I felt, too when I read your post. I'm sure that Codger is irreplaceable in your heart, but I hope you'll consider continuing to be a hero, in his honor.

I'm setting a calendar reminder for 10:30 AM today (I'm on Central Time) so that when the time comes, you will not be alone as Codger moves humanely forward.

What a blessing that you found Codger when you did. . The hardest thing about owning a pet is having to say good-bye. Please remind yourself the good you brought to him the last 18 months of his life. So sorry for your loss.
