Audition, easily the most frightening movie of all-time. Suspiria is also excellent, as well as Argento's Creepers. Really, Americans are lowbrow on the horror food chain, the best stuff's being done in other parts of the world, especially Japan.
People picking the remake of the 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' should be banned from commenting further on this thread.

The Gates of Hell is one freaky-ass movie...
I've never seen it, but I am dying to see the Sentinel all because of the scene with the old man in the room.

The Japanese versions of The Ring and The Grudge scared the bejesus out of me, and I normally don't get scared at scary movies.
I was bored beyond tears for the first half of The Exorcist, but kinda got into it for the second half. The Shining was freaky, and I just watched Clockwork Orange again last night - it's not a horror movie, but it sure disturbs me.

Well, IT scared me pretty badly up until recently. Ever since I was little I was scared and never watched the entire thing. Then about a month ago I finally watched it all. Not the scariest but pretty bad when it's a fear you've had since childhood.
Also SCREAM because I went to high school with some guys like the killers and could very easily imagine them doing that. OH and the Shining.
Aside from movies, a person who always scared me was Grace Jones. That woman (if I must use that term) has forever scared the hell outta me!

Wow...good choices!
Definitely Clockwork Orange. It is horrific. I NEVER want to see it again.
The Shining
The Ring
The Sentinel (it is very creepy)
Rosemary's Baby
Omen (the nanny's suicide during the birthday party...EWWWW!)
Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte
The Other (very, very, very creepy film)
Cries and Whispers (Ingmar Bergman...very creepy)
Nosferatu (silent movie...very powerful)
*shudders*

Posted: 2/24/05 at 9:45amI have a love/hate relationship with Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining". I loved the movie as a kid, then I read the novel and hated the movie for being so completely different from the novel (you see, Stephen King is my favorite author). Then, I saw the miniseries (w/ Steven Weber and Rebecca De Mornay) and loved it. THEN, I got over myself and learned to love the movie again.

Posted: 2/24/05 at 9:53amGonna have to go with Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist (on the subject of scary has anyone seen the behind the scenes featurettes for The Exorcist? The director was a little scary himself. He practically tortured the cast to get them to react different ways.)

I saw the Japenese Ring and didn't like it...I haven't seen the Japenese Grudge, probably won't. I do want to see Audition and Vanished. They look pretty scary.
Also, Ring 2 looks crazier than a box of almonds.

See, I'm weird when it comes to "scary" movies. Horror movies just don't usually scare me, I find them more comical, just because even if it could happen, I don't see it as usually happening. I saw the Ring with a group of people, 2 of them were scared ****less, 2 had seen it already and me and my crazy friend just laughed the whole time, especially during the "scariest" part. We just kept commenting on what happened and broke out laughing. A real scary movie is psychologically scary, something htat can happen and the idea just scares me.
That being said, without question, the scariest movie I've ever seen was a TV movie starring Candace Cameron and Fred Savage called "No One Would Tell." It was about an abusive relationship that very closely mirrored the one my sister was in just months before I saw the movie. The boyfriend eventually killed her at the end, if my sister did not get out of the relationship beforehand, that movie would have given me nightmares for months and months.

I agree about "Ringu". I was excited to see it, considering that the hype suggested said that it was scarier than "The Ring". I was laughable.

Kubrick's 'The Shining' has little to do with King's book. It's a fairly creepy movie, though. The problem is the book is boring, as proved by the boring mini-series that King did that was there to be a closer adaptation of the book.
In the end, I'll side with Kubrick on 'The Shining.' His movie was far more memorable than the book.

Posted: 2/24/05 at 2:29pmHad to stop lurking for a moment to add my vote for THE INNOCENTS with Deborah Kerr. I caught it on TV one night not knowing what it was all about but I love Deborah so I had to watch. Wow. They don't make movies like this anymore. They SHOULD! I didn't sleep for three days because of those pesky kids...
