When I was younger, When A Stranger Calls freaked me out.
"have you checked the children" and
...."he's calling from inside the house!"

Interesting trivia about When a Stranger Calls..
"The score for this movie contained the huge, building chord which is now famous as the sound for the THX logo"

I love horror movies and have seen all the best and worst. I would have to say that the scareiest to me had to have been Psycho, Jaws and The Exorcist.
Psycho and Jaws may not seem too scarey compared to many others but, years after seeing them, there is still the little tinge of fear every once in a while when I'm taking a shower and, years after seeing Jaws, I still will not swim in the ocean for fear of sharks. So, I guess those two movies left a long lasting impact on me.

Posted: 2/24/05 at 4:11pmThe Haunting (the original - not that crappy remake with Catherine Zeta Jones) is one film that almost always gives me nightmares after watching it - and done with almost zero special effects - its all in the mind - everything is suggested with sound and lighting - very, very frightening film.

WHEN A STRANGER CALLS was so SO scary, I need to look for that on DVD, it's wonderful.
Am I the only one that finds Disney's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES to be rediculously haunting and petrifying? I couldn't finish it as a kid, and I watched it again a few months ago and was still tormented and freaked out. AH!

Posted: 2/24/05 at 5:52pmScariest movie? Has to be Arachnaphobia. Yes the cheesy 80s movie about unrealistic spiders. But when you're seven and already scared of spiders, it can give you nightmares. And boy did it give me nightmares. I have never been able to watch it again now that I'm older, and I don't think I want to either. Other than that no "scary" movie scares me, I just think that they're so over the top it's funny.

Posted: 2/24/05 at 5:57pmMention of 'Stranger Calls', reminded me of the very first "calls coming from the house movie", BLACK CHRISTMAS. Still very creepy and shocking after all these years, and the house mother is a riot!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original)- I rented this on a whim when I was 12 and was terrified.
Clockwork Orange- my friend loves Stanley Kubrick and had me watch this as my first of his movies. Freaked me out so much that I wouldn't speak with him for days for making me watch it. And when he dressed up like Alex for Halloween once, I avoided him all day.

PSYCHO, by far
THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM (yes it's cheesey through my adult eyes but as a kid it scared the hell out of me. I couldn't sleep for nights and nights.)

Posted: 2/26/05 at 2:47amExorcist is hilarious. My friend and I have a sadomasochistic relationship that involves her pretending that she's the little girl and me pretending that I'm the priest. Good times with her sitting at the bedpost in a white robe...

Posted: 2/26/05 at 3:52amI agree. The original Haunting was truly scary without any blood and guts. Great film!

Posted: 2/26/05 at 4:04amJust caught up on this thread. I'm curious to popcultureboy and the person before him who didn't find Ringu scary, what your reasons were. I found that even without subtitles, it scared me much more than the American version did. I think it was mostly in the graphics more than the acting or anything.

Just read this thread as well... Gotta cast another vote for THE INNOCENTS with Deborah Kerr. Truly scary and truly wonderful! (and this is from someone who doesn't particularly care for horror movies, per se).
Another movie that was mentioned once is DON'T LOOK NOW - totally creeped me out! The so-called special effects seem kinda dated now, but the movie itself is still very effective, with its play of themes, sounds and lights. (Not to mention a very...ummm....famous love scene between Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland - but that's for another thread ).
And, finally a movie that really scared the s**t outta me is COPYCAT with Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter.

Posted: 2/26/05 at 10:51pmI need some help. I'm looking for a movie and i dont know the name of it. My mom and dad saw it years ago. All that my mom can remember was you could hear a thumping noise and then you saw a head rolling down the stairs, blood squirting everywhere and the eyes were still rolling. She said it is not Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte. Does anyone have any ideas?? Please help.
