The governor expresses hope that Proposition 8 would be overturned as protesters continue to march outside churches across California.

Hasn't he pubilcly said that gay marriage is wrong?
Jews in L.A. overwhelmingly opposed Prop 8.
So says the exit polls.

gertie---there's a big difference between saying "Gay marriage is wrong," and passing legislation to take away or ban another human being's rights.
Arnold personally doesn't agree with same-sex unions... but he also is very vocally against anyone removing the rights of California citizens.
You have to remember, he came from a very repressed government in Europe. One of the main reasons he left. I'm glad to hear him being so vocal about it now.
By the way, Obama and Biden feel the same way. They don't (or haven't) publicly supported gay marriage, but they were both very clearly and vocally AGAINST Prop 8.

I'm actually kind of impressed. I mean I totally understand that one CAN oppose gay marriage and also oppose Prop 8 (as Best said, that's Obama and Biden's stances as well), but for some reason I had kind of assumed Schwarzenegger would be the type to be for something like that.
good to know he's not :)
I agree with LPF. I think abortion is wrong, but I think it should stay legal.
Was also very interested in what Magic Johnson had to say about it on Larry King.

I'm kvelling for my California mishpuchah. ;-}
78 percent opposed, PJ!
Ya gotta love that.
Yeah, Arnie, that veto really helped our cause. Thanks.
I just read that Orson Bean contributed to help Prop 8. What a prick.

I missed it, dame; what did he say?
Didn't he veto a bill passed by the California legislature that would have made Gay Marriage legal?

I believe Big Arnie vetoed a marriage bill twice, did he not?
I think he's a big sissyboy.
'You have to remember, he came from a very repressed government in Europe'
Austria was anything but prepressed in 1947 when he was born. The yoke of Nazism had been lifted, and during his life there (1947-196
Austria was anything but repressed.
Now later on during the 80's or 90's (I believe) when the far right came to be in office there was a repressed time for foreigners......but I don't ever remember Austria being repressed during A's life for it's own white citizens.......yes I said white, as it's totally different for foreigners there.
Are you maybe thinking during the war? Or perhaps the former Czechoslovakia, Poland, or Hungary?
No, I'm talking about a documentary I saw on him where they showed him growing up as a kid in Austria, with footage and photographs, and there was plenty of oppression all around him.
Unless you're saying it was all staged.
This was archival footage explaining the options he had growing up.
(Not many.)
It's also important to remember that children can (and often do) reflect the history and values of their parents. Arnold may not have actually lived under opression himself but he would have had the repression his parents experienced impressed upon him as he grew up.
Sorry if the answer to this question is laughably obvious, but why didn't he speak in favour of gay marriages before the vote? Is he not allowed to speak out as the Govenor?
He vetoed the legislature because he wanted the Court to decide. This is odd as most Republicans want the opposite.
So, then the Court decided and he has stood by their ruling.
It is my understanding that he is for our right to marry, but has taken a conservative path to allowing it legally.
Ah! me at least comprend that - I wasn't at the front of the queue when it came to politics!
I did like Margaret Thatchers hats though. But as my old mother used to say, love the hat, hate the bitch.
perhaps stagey by his father and family or perhaps teachers, but certainly not by the Austrian Gov't...
I'll overlook the "staged" comment as it was tacky..., but European history is one of my passions, and any opression was not government induced.
When one uses a word like "oppression" one must realize what the word conjures up. I'm simply stating that at that time in Austrian history, the white population was not "oppressed".
As far as Republicans go, Schwarzenegger has always been kinda "mavericky."
did he ever bark and wear lipstick?
ALL competitive bodybuilders need to make a little money on the side, but those are just rumors.
He did pose nude in his lean and desperate years...
