I"m simple floored by this news. Record numbers of the GLBT community turned out to vote for a Republican for the first time, and Arnold sold us down river!

I'm so angry about this, I don't know what to say. I'm ashamed that I ever said kind words about the man. This is just not acceptable.

I am in no way defending him on this, but this isn't suprising really.

He always said that he felt this is a matter that should be decided either by the voters or by the court. He didn't feel that he should be the final tally on this and this decision, albeit it wrong and misguided, is at least consistant.

What Schwarzenegger doesn't seem to realize is that the voters did approve this when they voted people into the state senate that voter in favor of the Bill. Although, if we are going to discuss the things that Arnold doesn't realize, we'd be here a long time.

Between this and the way he is absolutely destroying the CA Education system financially makes me really regret voting for him. (I did at least vote no on the recall, but for Arnold if it went though. McClintock was too conservative and Bustamante was just sleazy)

Hopefully Maria will withhold sex for a while after this...

However, I can't say I'm that surprised either, although there was a glimmer of hope in my mind. There's just too much politics involved. I can't say that I hate Arnold even though this saddens me.

If I were Arnold, though, I'd be extra careful not to make any decisions that could be construed as going against "the will of the people" after this.

I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

Of course he does...he's from outside the US and wants to run for President. re: Schwarzenegger to Veto Gay Marriage Bill

Of course, he doesn't really have much of a chance of making that happening and even less of a chance of actually getting elected or even winning the nomination of his party.

This makes me sad, but hardly surprised. I don't know why he doesn't sign, his reputation couldn't possibly be more in the toilet right now--what difference could it make?

????? I certainly didn't vote for this idiot. He has ruined education in this state, robbed millions earmarked for schools which he said he'd return, and then did not.
He has no choice to veto it. I doubt the fool can be re-elected anyway, but had he NOT vetoed this he could be assured that he would not be.
The man is an idiot, his wife is an idiot.....may they all rot in hell.
And none of my friends voted for this fool

I think the short answer there is that a lot of the state Republicans still support Arnold here.

Yeah, he has lost a lot of the swing voters that the had before, but he still has a pretty strong foundation here in CA with the conservatives. Signing off on this bill would like eliminate any possibility of re-election for him.

Despite the poor job he's done, there isn't a viable and obvious Democratic candidate that is the heir-apparant here so he still has a good shot at remaining Governor.

I hope you're right Elphie, but the last I heard Robin Williams was being approached by the Democratic party to run against him. That could be scary.

Do you see any obvious candidates out of CA to oppose him?

Maria married him, she's an idiot.

She also did something I will never forgive her for. There was a small annual First Ladies grant for school libraries, a measly $40,000 per year that the governors wife would award to 20 school libraries which means 20 school libraries a year would get $2,000, an amount that means life and death in these days of little to no school library budgets. Maria nixed it.....$40,000......a drop in the bucket of the total state budget, yet 20 school libraries per year will now suffer because she decided NOT to continue with it
No...she's an idiot. Her mother, now that woman I adore.

She married him, I will grant.

But, this non-funding of the libraries is just not true. The lady is a published author. Of children's books. She does everything she can to fund libraries...there is no such fund at the discretion of the first lady.

touch me, sorry, WRONG. I work in the library field. I was involved with the last year of the fund, from 2003, which was with-held and not released until 2004.......don't call me a liar again. I know my facts

The fund was in effect, and Maria cancelled it. Do your research. The woman didn't even return my email that I sent asking where the $40,00 was going in the future

and lots of idiots are published authors.......and write childrens books......please

Elphaba,

After doing some additional research, it seems like what you are talking about was a county-specific measure (not controlled by the first lady, but by the county)...it was 45K per year, and Maria encouraged them to keep it, but instead they dismissed it because she replaced it with a significantly heavier funding (originally set at 2.5 million, but changed during deliberation in the State house to something else)...she has never been in control of money, and I am sure that your email confused her office.

P.S. Let's try to have a nice discussion without getting offended. I'm sorry if I came off as attacking you...I don't think the word "liar" ever came up, but if it seemed implied, I am sorry. Let's be friends.

This is sad. Everyone who opposes the progress of freedom from discrimination based on sexual orientation will have to live with the legacy of "bigot".

Last night on Logo, some woman, I assume a senator or something, was opposing the vote. Republican, shocking, I know. She said it is very sad that the people voted in proposition 22 to forbid gay marriage and now their voices were not being heard. I still stand by my simple question, "how does it hurt right wingers to allow two people in love, living together and perhaps even raising a family to marry?" It's a sad sad world.

sorry, WRONG AGAIN, what I was talking about was the Governor's Book Fund, administered by the first lady.......(started I believe by Sharon Davis)

http://www.literacynet.org/archives/govfund/index.html

AND.....as I am friends with 3 of the former Fund Advisory Board Members, AND JUST SPOKE WITH ONE........I will say again, the Fund WAS cancelled by Maria Shriver.

sorry if I over-reacted too.....friends it is

I have friends in the Governors office, so I sent a couple of emails out...no one seemed to have any idea what you were talking about...but that link helped a lot...now we get it. Here is the text of an email I just got back from my friend in the office:

This fund was a relic of the Davis adminitration. M didn't come in and take away funding, as this is a grant -- which relied on private funding. This organization is a private not for profit(a 501c3), and as such does not need Maria's approval to function...it needs only its own money (and, from the sound of it, a charter change).

These were GRANTS to select schools (very competitive ones, if I recall correctly), and should still be able to be applied for (if the 501c3 is still up and running). You should call the state library foundation and find out if you can track the 501c3 number to find out where the grant money went...it is possible the money just wasn't there.
