re: Se7en (1995)

Oh, sorry. I haven't seen anything she's in.

TO tell you the truth, I always thought that was Ruth Williamson. :runs away:

re: Se7en (1995)

How did this thread start out being about the movie Seven and end up being about Maureen McGovern? re: Se7en (1995)

Ask Captain Oblivious. He brought her in here.

Cap, shame on you. Kidding.

I can't believe no one else has seen this movie...

re: Se7en (1995)

Well, actually Rath brought her up, indirectly. She talked about a woman who was in a broadway show in 1995 and couldn't perform because she saw Seven. So Broadway86 asked if it was Cheno. Rath said no. Usually Rath answers most questions with "Maureen McGovern". She didn't this time.

So I didn't bring her up.

I'd say it's probably in my Top 10 of all time favorite thrillers. Great plot, terrific cast.

And who doesn't remember when this poor guy (who represented SLOTH, I believe) suddenly starts to cough and made everyone jump out of their seats. re: Se7en (1995)

Rath-Ok, grandmother.

And I only say that because she said that to me earlier.

That part always scares me.

Trivia: The SWAT guy who goes up in Victor's face (right before he starts coughing) is actually John C. McGinley, of "Scrubs" fame.

re: Se7en (1995)

Saw and Se7en are probably my two favorite horror movies because they hit home. Every day normal people who's lives are cut short by their own selfishness or self centeredness.
Gotta love a shot of reality in such a scary movie.

Aha! I've just worked out the identity of Rath's demented diva. I suspect that sort of fragility might perhaps stem from too many drugs in the 60s...

"Saw and Se7en are probably my two favorite horror movies because they hit home."

The problem is THEY'RE NOT HORROR MOVIES. They're crime fiction drpaed in the grotesque to try and compensate for the fact that they're actually REALLY BAD crime fiction.

re: Se7en (1995)

It's possible, wildcat, but from what I know of her, any drugs only added to the insanity she was either born with or developed in childhood.

PM me who you think it is...

While I'm not a fan of "Saw", I couldn't disagree more with your thoughts on "Se7en". I am, however, interested to hear why you feel that way.

re: Se7en (1995)

Saw could have been sooo great.
They should have bought the script from that kid, and then not let him be in the film. Made some re-writes, particularly near the end, and then they could have cast someone else besides a comedy actor to say things like "I'm so cold...must get help."
What a horrible scene. I think Glover was miscast too.

I can't compare Saw to Se7en, which is a highly superior film in every way. And despite its obvious disturbances, I believe Se7en to be one of the best thrillers of all time.

re: Se7en (1995)

I don't think 'Se7en' is good because it sets itself up to be a mystery for the first half as Freeman and Pitt look for clues and insight into the motivations behind the murders and then it just cops out of the solving of the mystery and has the antagonist spontaneously reveal himself and tell the officers everything they need to know. Then we're drug through a completely contrived 'morality' debate for a finish that serves no purpose other than to provide more opportunity for pompous pontificating from the antagonist and the filmmaker.

re: Se7en (1995)

That was part of his plan all along. He was toying with them. The only reason he offers himself up is to, in the long run, complete his work. While he claimed to be hand-picked by God to do these things, Det. Somerset questions why he would enjoy going to the lengths he did. It is then that Joe Doe reveals his motivations: He hates what the world has become.

Popa-
I guess we all love "REALLY BAD crime fiction" seeing that Se7en made over $350 million world-wide, making it the 94th top-grossing film of ALL-TIME.

Yes, because box office is the only credible measure of film quality.

re: Se7en (1995)

94 is a really big number, making it at the bottom of the list. But the real question is, is it on the AFI list? Doubt it.

Edited to write, it's #49 on IMDb.com's top 250 list.

It should be. At least, it's in my top 100. It's also on the IMDb top 50. Then again, so is "The Matrix".
