No real real surprise here, I guess it saved him from having to vote no.

I don't care how long you've served--you should be entitled to enormous government benefits...soldiers risk life and limb and need a guarantee of a decent life back home.

Below is a link to some of the verbal sparring that went on between Obama and McCain regarding this. McCain calls Obama's lack of military service into question, but disregards the fact that the bill had tons of bipartisan support, including vets Webb and Hagel. Fortunately, there is enough support to override the expected veto.

I don't understand what they'd prefer to buy with that money...

It's not like it offers free spa packages and SUVs....this is tuition, unemployment and very real, worthwhile services.

In their minds it offers a reason for these brave people leave the military. Instead they want these soldiers on their 11th and 12th tours only to come back (if at all)to the same poverty that inspired them to join the military.

John McCain has a lot of explaining to do. I'm not really sure who is base his anymore. The core Republicans hate him because he is "liberal." With this vote (or lack thereof) he sold the military up the river, meanwhile he pissed off the Jews and threw the Evangelicals under the bus. This is only the tip of the ice-burg when it comes to his military policies, he also wants to scrap their health care system for a privately run one.

It just goes on and on. I really think the Republicans opted out of this election so they can do battle in 2012 with a stronger party. By then the Democrats will have spent years "un-fu$king" Bush policies and we will be worse for the wear.

Yeah, I see the logic in that...we don't want to encourage people to join the military unless they want to do it for life...

I would think they'd try every way possible to encourage enlistment in these days of low recruitment.

They are! The military is now courting prison inmates and juvenile delinquents. And don’t for a second think the military’s recent blind eye at homosexuality is progress. They are desperate.

I'm starting to think that the Republicans are letting McCain have one last run at the White House, a la Bob Dole's run against Clinton. They don't really expect him to win, but they'll let him run to shut him up.

They've screwed the country up enough to keep everybody busy for several years cleaning up the mess, by which time they'll have found a new puppet to install to screw everything up again.

It has to be that Roscoe, I am still shocked he ditched Hagey. Though that's a McCain I like, it is shocking.

Those Jewish votes in Ohio and Florida seems small but seriously add up in those volatile states. What's left? The military.
