I've just been in love with Gwyneth and her fashion sense for the past 10 years, so I'm 100% biased.
Although I think Hilary Swank HAS been brilliant, for me it depends on what she's cast as. Scrappy outsider that you're pulling for, perfect. But other films (Affair of the Necklace) left me very cold.
I think for the under-40 set, Kate Winslet is my pick for most talented.

Pop - It would be nice for Tilda to move on up the ladder, so to speak. For years, ORLANDO with EDWARD II has been one of my favorite double-features.
I love ExistenZ too. Any film with Jennifer Jason Leigh is a good thing.
I knew there was a reason the pooch approves of you, Poppy.
Tilda's performance in Edward II is astounding. She's also masterful in the much lauded The Deep End. I just love her.
by the by, where is joseph fiennes these days?
he's in Running With Scissors, due next year. A friend of mine saw a test screening of it a few days ago and adored it. He's about to open in a play in London too.
Joey Fiennes was in the Al Pacino "Merchant of Venice" and will reunite with "Shakey in Love" co-star Paltrow in "Running with Scissors."
ok, then where has he been? he's certainly not as prolific as ralph.
Also, IMO, not nearly as talented as Ralph. Actually, I find it frustrating to watch him, sometimes.
Looking forward to "Running with Scissors." Apart from Gwynnie, it includes Kristin Cheno, Patrick Wilson, Vanessa Redgrave, Evan Rachel Wood (the new Jodie Foster?), and Annette Bening.
Gwyneth always surprises me. Almost every time I see her in a film, I think she will be boring or overrated and she always surprises me by turning in a great performance. She's one of those actresses I think I should dislike for some reason, but end up with no reason to dislike her at all.
matt, have you seen moonlight & valentino yet?
LOL Robb- not the best movie, but I honestly found no fault with Gwyneth's performance.
The real star, however, was Bon Jovi's hair.
she irritated me to no end in that movie for some reason.
The one scene I honestly liked was when she was naked and asked her sister to tell her if she looked ok. She was so young then, and it had this adorable air of innocence.
Actually, I did see Moonlight and Valentino, but it was many years ago. I remember liking Elizabeth Perkins in that film. But then, I always like her. She's wonderful in Weeds.

The Paltrow win was bothersome to me but no where as upsetting as in 2001 where Julia Roberts won over Ellen Burstyn and Joan Allen.
Ellen was perfect in "Requiem For A Dream."
i hated requiem almost as much as i hated pi.
Julia Roberts winning an Oscar for anything is ridiculous. But, she IS Hollywood royalty.
My vote went to Burstyn that year. Unbelievable performance.

I definitely enjoyed Ms. Burstyn's performance much more than the movie.
The movie was painful (in a good way), a sharp contrast to Erin Brokovich which was quite feel good and borderline sitcom.
Ellen Burstyn's performance in Requiem... has to be one of the best there is. Julia winning over her is a joke, and proves that the Oscars are, for lack of a better term, crap.

The Burstyn-Aranofsky combination will strike again later this year. We'll see how that goes.
