and the smacking has started...
I love this movie!!

I liked Shakespeare in Love, but I wasn't blown away by any aspect of it except Judi Dench, who had more presence in her 10 minutes of screen time than the leads managed in half the movie. I haven't seen Saving Private Ryan (I have a weak stomache), so I can't say anything about the Oscar race that year, but Shakespeare in Love just didn't strike me as Best Picture material.
These were the nominees that year, I have seen all but Red Line and to me Shakespeare was the only one remotely worthy:
Elizabeth
Life Is Beautiful
Saving Private Ryan
Shakespeare in Love
The Thin Red Line
I think
American History X, The Truman Show, and Gods and Monsters all would have been better competition. (although I think I still may throw my vote to Shakespear)
Yeah, if Truman Show had been nominated, then things would have gotten interesting.
if it's not scottish it's CRAP!
Once again, Garland Grrrl is completely correct.
Gwyneth was lovely in the movie. And I certainly would have voted for her...but no necessarily because she was 'better' than Blanchette.
The marketing for Ms. Paltrow's Oscar was BEYOND brilliant. I'll never forget a cover of Variety I saw that featured 4 pictures of Ms. Paltrow as the 4 characters she "played". And I thought then and there, "SH*T she did a lot in that movie!!!" Yes...I'm completely susceptible to great marketing...I'll admit it. Miramax's campaign that year was spectacular.
exactly. shakespeare was a good movie but SPR deserved the oscar.
oh, and a shout-out to brenda. my girl from scary movie.
Shakespeare was a delightful film with a masterful screenplay, excellent performances (with the exception of Affleck), stunning art direction and tight direction and editing.
After the shock of the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan (which I almost walked out on), the rest of the film was rather dull and plodding. The cinematography and sound were the only aspects I found award-worthy.
Paltrow was fantastic in Shakespeare and while I thought Blanchette was good, I just didn't think she could compare to Paltrow's versatility that year. My favorite Blanchette perormance to date is The Gift. I think the Academy threw her a bone this year for Aviator.
Yes, THE TRUMAN SHOW was released that year, wasn't it? I remember being shocked that it wasn't nominated, because for me it was the movie of the year. It should have gotten the nomination instead of the lukewarm THIN RED LINE.
God, the Truman Show was amazing. I just saw it again a few weeks back and was still blown away.
Thin Red Line was absolutely BORING. There was one fascinating and poignant scene and the rest just sort of floundered about.

What I'll remember most about those Oscars was my incredulity at Sir Ian's loss - I really thought it was his (or at least thought it SHOULD have been!)
who was he up against? what role was he nominated for?
He was nominated for Gods & Monsters. He lost to Reborto Benigni for Life Is Beautiful.
I am in a minority here but I thought Truman Show was terrible. Boring as all get out and it only got going about 3 minutes before it finished. It's a shame that the vastly superior EdTV was ignored as people fell over themselves to proclaim Truman Show as the second coming.
Gwyneth's acting at its best doesn't hold a candle to Cate's at her worst.
Which isn't to say that Gwyneth is bad. But it is to say that La Blanchett is phenomenal.
Paltrow never fails to bore the crap out of me.

Cate and Tilda Swinton are my favorite actresses of their generation. I would KILL to see Cate do HEDDA GABLER this year (well, maybe not kill, but damn close!)
I am so happy that Tilda Swinton is about to get the recognition she so truly deserves for her role as the Ice Queen.
Rath, I feel the same way. Dull and boring are my favorite adjectives (or nominatives) for Paltrow. Cate, on the other hand...
By the way, Poppy, the overshadowing of similar shows also makes me think of the largely-ignored and possible much better Existenz, which fell victim to Matrix craze.
my guilty pleasure: bounce with paltrow and affleck. i love the story and the thought behind it. also, sliding doors has a similar "what if?" premise (and paltrow).

"No, really, I'm just honored to be NOMINATED!"
robbiej- I completely agree about the marketing.
I remember the cover of EW, with the title (per usual) "The Oscar Race Begins!" (Like anyone outside of H'wood really gives that much of a shot.) I digress...
On the cover was my beloved Gwynnie, looking like Botticelli's Venus, with a golden halo around her.
There was no question she was going to win.
b'waysinger- I hate you for saying that about Gwynnie!
I agree about Cate B though- sheer brilliance.
Sorry, Cheno, she just does NOT do it for me. FOr my money, the two-time Oscar winner, Hilary Swank, is the most talented in the under-40 set.
