Should We Bail Out California?

There are a lot of wealthy people here, and they are being taxed to their limits. Personal income tax is at 10.3% for the top bracket, and the sales tax was just increased.
I personally think need to we find some way to void or modify some of our existing service contracts, legalize marijuana and tax the crap out of it, and free from prison non-violent drug offenders.
And, deal with the fact that the infrastructure is being crushed under the stress of a large immigrant population, whose labor the entire country benefits from, but whose services are largely supported by California.
At this point, I am just about ready for some doomsday scenario because Sacramento has been so inept at running the state.
EDIT - and, fix our stupid proposition system, which makes our ballots unintelligible and creates a web of rules and regulations that are impossible to implement.
And, David was worse, believe it or not. Not much worse, but worse. I think Arnold has just given up trying after his big effort to reform the system was shot down a few years back.

I think EVERY business or state asking for a hand out should be denied. If you are failing, it's because you screwed things up.
I don't think the Government should bail out anyone.
How much did we give a certian car company, and they are still going under? BILLIONS wasted.
Ilive here, and I think California should put on it's big girl panties, get rid of Anuld, and makes cuts where they belong. There is so much wasteful spending, it sickens me.

Ditto to Diva.
FYI, I also read somewhere (I cannot find the site or link) where California pays far more in federal taxes than it receives back in programs and services from Congress.

"I also read somewhere (I cannot find the site or link) where California pays far more in federal taxes than it receives back in programs and services"
From 1981 - 2005 (last year of data available)
there were 20 'donor' states and 30 'debtor' states plus the major money pit that is the District of Columbia.
Top Ten 'Donor' States (averaged annual returns on $1 paid in)
New Jersey (0.65)
Illinois (0.74)
New Hampshire (0.76)
Connecticut (0.77)
Nevada (0.78 )
Michigan (0.80)
Delaware (.81)
Minnesota (0.82)
Wisconsin (0.84)
New York (0.85)
California (0.92) (13th)
other 'donor' states:
Texas, Indiana, Oregon, Massachusetts, Ohio, North Carolina, Colorado, Washington, Georgia
Top Ten 'Debtor' States (averaged annual returns on $1 paid in)
New Mexico ($1.98 )
Mississippi ($1.69)
North Dakota ($1.55)
Virginia ($1.46)
Montana ($1.45)
West Virginia ($1.45)
South Dakota ($1.42)
Alabama ($1.40)
Hawaii ($1.37)
Missouri ($1.35)
other 'debtor' states:
Arkansas, Alaska, Maine, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Tennessee, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Rhode Island, Florida, Wyoming, Vermont, Pennsylvania
and then the money pit: District of Columbia ($5.47) - DC also has one of the highest rates of increase of household income in recent years (DC residents do not have voting representation in Congress but it's difficult to argue Congressmembers don't benefit from funding DC).

Why not as it is all Monopoly money anyway?
Like NY, their legislators will do anything to stay in power & promise anything to any group who will promise to vote for them.

Posted: 5/19/09 at 7:03pmI'm not sure we need a bail out. It would just be nice if business started hiring again. I'm going to be on the streets within the year if I can't find a new job.

If you have an average education (basically a Bachelors) and an average work history, good luck.
Being middle of the road I'm not enough of a specialist or have the niche career for a lot of jobs available and am overqualified for most of the rest. If you have only a high school degree or are in a medical field you have it made.
I got four filled job notices in one batch of email on Sunday night - most are taking over six weeks to respond. It was a rough night. There are a bunch of others I've yet to hear from (and possibly won't).

There was a report on our local news that Colorado spent taxpayers' money to lure California businesses to our state. 5 businesses are in talks to move here.

That stuff happens all the time, uncageg. You should see what Texas paid in local, state, and even FEDERAL taxes for Toyota's San Antonio plant. Toyota virtually got the land and the plant for free. A lot of other southern and southeastern states are doing the same to woo the foreign automakers, that's why there was such an uproar over the Congress critters from those states (especially Shelby of Alabama and Corker of Tennessee) bashing the Detroit automakers.
And now poor baby Corker is crying because GM might close its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant.
