Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

For fifty-five years the People’s Republic of China as trampled on the rights of sovereignty of the people of Tibet.

The Chinese Government is building a dam on the Yangtze River that has flooded and wiped-out villages that have history going back two thousand years.

The Chinese Government continues to arm and aid North Korea.

The Chinese Government trampled the rights of the demonstrators at Tiananmen Square (how quickly we all forget)

The Panchen Lama was 6 years old when he and his parents were kidnapped from their home in Tibet by the Chinese government. He is the world's youngest political prisoner and he has been missing for over 6 years. Panchen Lama is a title like Vice-President or Prime Minister that Tibetans give to the second greatest leader of Tibet. Panchen means "Great Scholar" and Lama is a word Tibetans use for a religious teacher. Tibetians believe that the Panchen Lama is the protector of all the world's living beings. Yet the Government of the People’s Republic of China was so threatened by a SIX YEAR OLD BOY that they kidnapped and have PROBABBLY KILLED his entire family.

Yet we continue to have free trade with them (brought to you by the Clinton Administration)

Yet we are planning on attending their Olympics.

For the record I have nothing against the People of China. I'm currently dating a Chinese national.

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

For the life of me I have no idea why Bejing got them to begin with. Many countries boycotted Moscow back in 1980, we shall see what happens.
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." Conan O'Brien

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

In any Olympic boycott the only people who are hurt are the athletes.

That is what happened to our 1980 team. I know several who were shut out and it took them a long time to get through the depression/disappointment.

Don't say, That's too bad they'll get over it". That is justifying your ends via their means and it is crappy. The Olympics was their whole focus then and it was taken from them for political purposes.

After our boycott of the Moscow games, the US could never take the high road again. We lost in so many ways.

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

WOSQ,

So the happiness of the American Athletes is more important that the Sovereignty of the Tibetan People?

It’s more important and the rights of the demonstrators at Tiananmen Square?

It’s more important than the ninth Panchen Lama who was murdered by the Chinese Goverment?

It's more importnat than the six-year-old boy (tenth Panchen Lama) and his family who were kidnapped and probably murdered by the Chinese Government?

It’s more important than the hundreds of temples and monasteries in Tibet that are hundreds, if not thousands of years old that the Chinese have destroyed?

It’s more important than the environment of Tibet being destroyed by over-farming by the Chinese?

It’s more important that the rights of the Chinese people who have been forced to move to Tibet?

It's more important that the line of the Dali Lama, one of the oldest, if not the oldest soverign lines in the in the World will probaly end when the current Dali Lama dies?

If China is such a terrible place why didn't we invade it instead of Iraq...?

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

Is that the best retort you can come up with?

The Dali Lama wants a non-violent resolution of the conflict over Tibet. I'm afraid that attitude will lead to the end of his country just like political correctness will lead to the end of ours.

War with China? It's coming. I estimate it will happen about fifty years from now. It's inevitable. I also think we're gonna lose.

No war with China, they don't have oil.

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

Thank you for playing the liberal trump card: "we only invade if they have oil" I was waiting for it.

The liberals want to have their cake and eat it to: They want to drive their 10mpg SUVs but they don't want to pay $4 a gallon for oil. So they have to decide where the oil should come from: Alaska, Gulf of Mexico, or the Middle East.

If we were to drill the hell out of Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico, we would need ZERO foreign oil and we could let the children of the Middle East starve. But that would be wrong.

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

"the liberals": sounds like someone inhuman. Thanks for the label. I think labels are alwasy important to encourage mutual understanding.

This liberal doesn't own an SUV. This liberal writes letters at least once a week encouraging decreasing foreign dependance on oil.

We don't need to own the oil in the middle east to help the children there. I think we do a good enough job exporting our factories there, and making the kids work at a low wage. Could it be possible that there is a way to let them have their finite oil, and teach them new ways to survive...hey, maybe we'll learn humanity in the course of it, so we don't call each other dehumanizing/delegitimizing/deindividualizing names like "the liberals". Maybe it's possible. Maybe.

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

Yes, it would be wrong.

A far better idea would be to further develop technology in alternate means of cleaner, cheaper energy (mainly solar energy) to make the country - and by example, the world - less dependent on fossil fuels.

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

I think we should boycott. All the hot athletes (divers, gymnasts, wrestlers, water polo boys and swimmers) should come to New York. We can set up pools and mats in Times Square and let them compete here. It would be hot.

A total win-win situation.

The bonus is: some much needed consistency to our foreign policy agenda.
Stop worrying about what I'm doing -- focus instead on what you're eating.

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

Wrong, RodneyK. You forget the other nasty side of liberal tree-hugging: we believe in saving energy, too. See? Consistent logic. Gotta love that.

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

The beauty of the olympics is how hundreds of nations can put aside differences and compete in a somwhat harmonious fashion. While yes, this sounds like rhetoric, the fact of the matter is that these games allow countries to symbolically ignore political dissagreements etc. in order to comete.

Aside from this, I'm sure dozens of countries could have justified a boycott of the 1996 games held here.

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

Chote - Amen! Even though the games have been infiltrated by professionals and drugs, what little reason there is left to hold them lies in the elevation of our commonalities above our differences. If we're not going to do that, best not to have them at all.

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

Damn. I go to lunch and I miss so many posts it will take me ten minutes to retort.

touchmeinthemorning, I'm sorry you were offended by the label, "the liberals" if "the conservatives" was the worst thing I was ever called in this forum, I'd be doing OK.

Save energy: I'm for it. I suggest you visit www.TheDetroitProject.org they are group that want the big three automakers to make hybrids, fuel cell, etc. vehicles. I'm for it.

One problem I have is the fact that while we (Westerners) go to great length and expense to make our vehicles more planet friendly (emissions tests, etc) large countries like India, Mexico, and ... China do nothing.

I'm actually kind of liberal about some things: I'm in favor of saving evergy. I'm in favor of legal abortion (personally I think it's wrong, but making it illegal is not realistic). I think if two (enter the currently appropriate word for people who like to mate with people who have the same sex organs) want to get married, what do I care?

By the way, I don't own a car at all.
I thought about getting one of those Segway things, but I figure it would be useless in the winter.

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

the current appropriate word you are looking for is "people"...if any two people want to get married.

And, India, Mexico, and China don't spend their money on it because rich countries like America aren't investing in technology to make it affordable for poor countries. If they can't afford enough money to dispose of the feces sitting in the hole in the ground outside their homes, I am sure finding an affordable hybrid or hydro car is not on their list of priorities.

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

well yes, but France, England, Germany, etc. are all considered to be westerners but they are in the Easter Hemisphere.

But, thank you for playing. We have some lovely parting gifts for you.
#23

re: Should we boycott the Bejing Olympics?

Who knew Easter had its own Hemisphere?

England is where the Meridian starts. Hence, the beginning and the end of the Eastern/Western hemisphere. France crosses that longitude as well...

kiss,

you're my favorite. I want you in a small box to bring out and show friends at parties. =)

You know you've won an argument when the only thing your opponent can critique is a typo.

Arguing on the internet is like running the special olympics: even if you win you're still retarded.
