"That was just the first gay-hating verse. It upsets me that after all this time -- since 2001, to be specific -- Eminem still insists on using hate speech against people like me in his music. Some may deem pop and hip-hop lyrics "unimportant," but music being a medium that I work in, I know firsthand the power that it wields to influence and affect lives (as I'm sure millions more can attest). Time and time again, Eminem has been informed about the negative impact that his hate speech has on the lives of the gay community, and although he's given some non-apologies to the likes of Anderson Cooper and issued platitudes about how he doesn't care what you are as long as you're "nice to me," he continues to create derogatory lyrics against us."

I get the character argument but it has been a long time since Eminem has A) been releasing music so the audience at large has recent context for the character and B) been referred to as Slim Shady in a song. It's Eminem or Marshall Mathers now and the character of Slim Shady has been folded into the total package.
I feel bad that Sia got caught up in this, but it's not the first time that Eminem has written these kinds of lyrics. I doubt the Sia collaboration will be a single so she'll probably be able to distance herself from it just fine.

Posted: 11/4/13 at 1:16pmThis is one of those times when the phrase "I just CAN'T" fits best for me. I just can't whip up my anger about Eminem at this point. I can't possibly care less about him. I can't possibly fast forward any quicker through his lame sing-along-with-his-own-record performances on Saturday Night Live with his up-to-the-minute (if the minute is in 1993) winter parka and his stupid scowl. It's like getting upset about Andrew "Dice" Clay and his misogyny and homophobia in 2013. The world has moved on, but people like Marshall are stuck and obsolete.

I don't know how to say this without saying it how I've said it a million times. But that word, those kind of words, when I came up battle-rappin' or whatever, I never really equated those words?.?.?.It was more like calling someone a bitch or a punk or asshole. So that word was just thrown around so freely back then. "
I know just what he means! When someone is a has-been, a closet case, a no-talent boob, we call him an Eminem.

Eminem's response:
In that song, Eminem takes down rivals with the lines “Little gay-looking boy / So gay I can barely say it with a straight face-looking boy” and “You f–s think it’s all a game ’til I walk a flock of flames.” Those lines have both widespread controversy and confusion, considering Slim Shady has constantly had to walk back his stance on homosexuals.
He attempted to clear everything up in the pages of Rolling Stone this week: “I don’t know how to say this without saying it how I’ve said it a million times,” he told the magazine. “But that word, those kind of words, when I came up battle-rappin’ or whatever, I never really equated those words..."
At that point, the writer helps him along. “To mean homosexual?” he asks.
