Okay, so I believe I'm the first person to post about this movie. Could be wrong...
Anyone else seen this since it opened last week? A couple plot holes and a disappointing performance by Juliet Rylance, but Hawke is terrific, and the movie itself is terrifying and remarkably successful on technical and visceral levels. Perfect for this time of year, and horror fans should find much to appreciate.
Thoughts?

Posted: 10/20/12 at 11:04amSaw it on opening weekend and loved it. Had a few good "Jump" scenes. Very disturbing, creepy. Even though I did have it figured out to some extent, but still full of suspense and dread. Hawke really surprised me. Not really a fan of his, but he was excellent in this.

I saw it tonight and was kind of "eh" about it. I had it all figured out in the first 15 minutes (and if you don't figure it out while watching it it's easy to see how others would when it ends) so really it was all about watching how they were eventually going to end up there.
There were a few good scare moments (the "mowing the lawn" sequence made me jump, something that hardly ever happens) helped by the score which, at times, was also wildly inappropriate and confusing, adding sounds that made it sound like the characters should be hearing them as well.
I thought Hawke was great as was Deputy So-And-So. And it was also nice to see my dead Grandmother make a cameo as the demon Beluga, or whatever it's name was. Because when I imagine her in hell, that's kinda what she looks like.
Overall, it was ok and if re Blu-Ray has a decent commentary track, I'd even pick it up when I can find it for under $10. But as a horror film, it was pretty pedestrian adding nothing new or "stepping anything up" in the genre. But I've seen a hell of a lot worse!

Posted: 10/24/12 at 3:10pmI really enjoyed the movie, especially the first half of it. However, does anyone else think that the movie would have worked even better without the supernatural element (i.e. the spooky kids)? The found footage was gritty, horrific, and it felt real. To me, it was the most unsettling thing about the movie. The shhh gesturing kids - not so much.
