Sitcom Housekeepers

Who is your favorite sitcom housekeeper?

Right now, I'm liking Mrs. Naugutuck on Maude. She's saucy, she's dotty and she's Cockney.

I'd have to vote Florence on The Jeffersons as second. She's saucy and very funny. And she really knows how to work a kitchen/living room divider.

Hazel always got on my nerves as being too much like a foghorn and always up in everyone's business.

Alice on The Brady Bunch is ok, but a bit bland.

Mrs. Garrett was always trying to ingratiate herself with the kids.

Mrs. Porter, the Ricardos housekeeper was great. She wouldn't put up with any of Lucy's crap.

The housekeeper on The Cosby Show must only work between the hours of 1 am and 3 am because we never see her.

Mrs. Livingston On "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" and Mr. French on "Family Affair". Yeah, I know I am dating myself and proud of it!

Whenever I saw Rosario, I wondered why she left the convent in San Juan.

Florence on the The Jeffersons probably had the best gig. She cleaned after 2 adults who really wanted her for show. And really never made a mess.

Mrs. Livingston was the most needed. Otherwise Eddie would have been a delinquent. Similar to Mr. French.

Benson was there for laughs.

Belvedere had issues. Let's leave it at that.

I thought Daphne was Mr. Crane's physical therapist! She NEVER seemed to do a thing around that place.

I thought Daphne was the physical therapist too. I'm gonna go with Florence on the Jeffersons.

And why are TV maids ALWAYS so sassy and wiser than their employer? Has anyone ever met a maid in real life that was so sassy to their boss like that?

Yes, I remember her doing a lot of the cooking too and the joke was what a bad cook she was. She used to make things like sheep's head.

I haven't watched it recently, but I thought Berta on "Two and a Half Men" was hilarious.
Also Niles on "The Nanny," if he counts.

I always assumed it was the traditional stereotypical role of the 'sassy servant,' which used to be a theatrical trait. The servant usually got to say everything the audience wanted to say/was thinking and was never afraid to tell their master/mistress what for. A good example of this would be Dorine from the play Tartuffe.

Or at least, that's the definition that I remember from my World Literature class. :-p
