What I meant specifically was that I've found on occasion that people actually stopped and thought "Wait, am I really hoping that my friend's life is less than mine?" and we had a better dialogue because of it.
(It was an anecdote more than it was advice, I guess.)

All the coverage of gay marriage inspired my father to call me and remind he won't come to my wedding. So the sea of red from my chosen family and friends on Facebook has been very heartwarming.

My mom, who has progressed greatly in regards to gay rights, is one of his biggest fans.
On a side note, it was not until that she realized how many federal laws discriminate against those who cannot legally marry that she understood why civil unions were not enough. The fundamental unfairness of the system to gay couples is what finally got through to her.
