Oh, I have no problem commenting on those bigoted posts with something similar, Reg. It's too easy to reveal the bigotry wrapping their Jesus-y talk.

A favorite of mine is "It turns out, God DID make Adam and Steve! I just went to their wedding!"

Doodle, I know you're more than up to the task!

What I meant specifically was that I've found on occasion that people actually stopped and thought "Wait, am I really hoping that my friend's life is less than mine?" and we had a better dialogue because of it.

(It was an anecdote more than it was advice, I guess.)

Oh, I gotcha...and you're correct, and like you said, if it makes people think...that's something. Which is the point of painting facebook red.

It's also the reason I dont simply unfriend her and others.

I once asked a religious conservative if he "respected" my relationship of (then) 17 years. When he responded with his standard response invoking his religion, I said "I hope you will understand then that I can have only as much respect for your marriage as you have for mine."

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

The Little Edie one is my favorite and I'm totally stealing it.
All the coverage of gay marriage inspired my father to call me and remind he won't come to my wedding. So the sea of red from my chosen family and friends on Facebook has been very heartwarming.

Joey, I think I've said this before. But our Episcopal church locally has a gay priest and the congregation really loves him. I think it's great.

My temple has a gay Rabbi. His partner (I don't think they are married) is a cantor and though he is affiliated with another temple, he does sing at some event. His being gay, while a factor by one or two folks when they hired them, has to my eyes become a complete non-factor (as it should be).

My mom, who has progressed greatly in regards to gay rights, is one of his biggest fans.

On a side note, it was not until that she realized how many federal laws discriminate against those who cannot legally marry that she understood why civil unions were not enough. The fundamental unfairness of the system to gay couples is what finally got through to her.
