Has anyone had those headaches the first few days due to lack of sugar/carbs?
The Atkins Endulge ice cream is the best! So is the Atkins candy and shakes. The only problem is that it's expensive.
i tried atkins last year and by the third day i got really nauseous after eating breakfast. then, i got sick several times over the next few hours and still felt nauseous. when i told my boyfriend and my mom (who both were on or who had done the diet) about it, they both said i was nuts.
well, a few weeks later, my mom talked to a woman who ran atkins programs and she said that some people do become sick when they reach ketosis, but that it "will only last a few days."
well, i cannot stand getting sick and feeling nauseous so i was not going to put up with this and immediately went off it.
glad it's working for some of you though....
I know what you mean, when I was on Atkins I felt really sick and got a lot of headaches. I also felt weak a lot, and had trouble doing simple things like walking up the stairs without feeling tired and winded. It's no fun...but it does work.

Headaches--I get them now when I eat anything with a lot of sugar. I forgot and ordered a coke when I was out a week or so ago and Man did I pay for it. I using Splenda now.
Like I said, I think part of the key is to give yourself a day to be off of the diet and have what you want. That way you have something to look forward to and I think IMHO that some carbs are good for you. So if I want pasta or whatever, that's my day to have it. No guilt.
I really didn't expect to lose this much weight this fast--it's just happening. Considering I only needed to lose 30-35 pounds max, you would think that it would take longer.

Corine, you might find yourself shedding a few pounds if you quit drinking.
Drinking doesn't cause you gain weight. I'm one of those people who can eat anything he wants, as much as he wants and still stay thin.

well, glue-to-be, we can only hope it's a tapeworm.
Real funny, Papalovesmambo. You're a real comedian.
thanks, but i must give all credit to allah, glue-to-be, as surely he is munificent with the yuk yuk lines.
The best way to do Atkins is to not be fanatical. Some of you may remember the old "Stillman" diet from the 60s -- it was protein ONLY, and you never, ever visited the WC. Personally, I'm damned grouchy when I fail to make that particular trip on an on-going basis, so I work hard to add good, high fiber carbs. Trust me, you folks who are new -- you can't live on eggs and bacon and canned tuna alone and have your digestion work. And two weeks in, after a steady diet of coffee and meat n'cheese, your breath is yummy, too.
But you can drink a on Atkins, and if you enjoy wine, especially, you should. It's a nice little reward in the evening. You don't feel like you're "dieting." White wine is only .9 carbs in the Atkins book, so have one or two glasses if you want. If you're a sugar craver, I think it helps curb that.

I think your allowed red wine on South Beach but I don't drink.

You can drink red wine and whiskey on SB. I drink Diet Coke and whiskey at the bars. Beer is the devil. lol
South Beach is all about eating carbs--good carbs. Wheat and Multigrain and Brown Rice. It's not a diet after the first 2 weeks--it's like choosing to be vegetarian--but not as strict.
And to address the issue of going to the WC, I did have to take fiber pills the first 2 weeks. Now everything is super thanks for asking. lol
Headaches--I would say that if it is really that bad for you, then ease into the diet. Lower the sugar, don't cut it out completely. Work down to no sugar, which is an easier life than you might think. So many products have no sugar options. I even buy Atkins brownie and cookie mixes. Joseph's is a great sugar free brand of cookies that you can find at Food Emporium and some delis on 8th Ave or on the web.
I tried Atkins and after two weks felt like I was gaining weight. I know a couple of people who have tried it and either lost nothing or lost very little after sticking to the diet for months. I also have a friend that lost a god deal of weight and looks great. I don't know if the difference is in how strictly you stick to it or if it has different effects on different people.
I believe the key to success in any diet is, as Auggie said, not to be fanatical. Also, don't make it an all or nothing diet. A co-worker of mine has been on various diets with no success for a few years. The problem is she eats one small thing that's not on her diet then takes the attitude "i ruined the diet for today. Might as well eat whatever i want and start again tomorrow."
You need to refrain from punishing yourself for small slips and don't take a defeatist attitude toward them. Even on a diet you need to allow youself some pleasure foods in moderation. It really does help you to not feel deprived.
don't forget to exercise!!!
that's easy for you, kangaroo!
I started Pilates and Tae Bo. I feel like Patti LaBelle!
I know the feeling, JRB. I used to be able to stay in shape by eating fattening things only in moderation and exercising. The past couple of months I've gained and am having a lot of trouble loosing. I have to be on a certain type of diet for a chronic illness so I can't really do most of the diets that are around. Exercising has become difficult because of lots of low energy days. I tried Atkins but gained weight...and started to feel very sick. Atkins, South Beach and WW all say "don't eat this." My dietician and doctor ay "eat more of it."
It's just maddening.
i'm dyin' cuz the damn stone knocked me out of my workouts for a week and now i'm trying to work back into 'em...ouch.

Thought I'd bring this back to the top to ask how everyone who is on a diet is doing.
As of this morning. 19 lbs gone. 11 (or 16 if I decide to go down 5 extra) more to go.

It is maddening, isn't it Orion? I also saw a nutritionist, which worked for me. She advised eating certain carbs too, and it still worked for me. The difference with me that allowed me to lose weight was eliminating most of the refined white sugars, flours, starches, etc.
My theory, as simple as it is, is that people lose weight using so many different methods because when they start on their new chosen 'diet'-they're usually consuming less food than they used to.

Not so. I still eat like a pig. Even the things I used to eat. I had Pecan Shortbread Sandies this morning. I'm still losing the weight.

I have had no luck with Aiken. I think he only has one good song.

Just my theory, ma'am. It's a general one. I'm glad you had pecan sandies, keep up the good work.
