So I saw HOSTEL...

I wasn't planning on seeing this today, but passed by a theatre and saw that it was starting soon, so I thought "what the hell". I read some review that said Eli Roth had created a modern masterpiece. What I saw today was a modern piece of sh*t. It was one of the most homophobic things I've ever seen and I see pretty much everything. Watching the first hour of this, I was reminded of the guys in high school who went around calling everyone "fag" than went home and stroked it to the gay porn mags they had hidden under their bed. Roth is one self-loathing fag, himself, who needs to show as many naked women on screen as the MPAA will allow so that he can prove he's a "real man" and after this I won't be seeing anything else he makes.
Let's get one thing straight, this was NOT a horror film. It was not original or suspenseful at all. If you've seen any slasher film since the original Friday the 13th, than trust me, you've seen this. And just like all those movies, mocked in countless others like "Scream", the moral is that horny teenagers die. Want to have sex? Go ahead, but prepare to be executed for it. Notice your friends start dropping off one by one? GET THE HELL OUT! There's only so many of these types of movies you can watch before you start having absolutely no sympathy for these people and their stupidity. And please, if you are at all able to get out of whatever horrible situation you're in - DON'T GO BACK IN. Have these people never seen a scary movie before?!
Eddie Murphy's "The Haunted Mansion" scared me more than garbage did. If you want to see a Jay Hernandez movie, save your $10.75 and buy a copy of the highly underrated "Crazy/Beautiful" which starred him and Kirsten Dunst in one of her best performances. In fact, I think I'll go watch that now...

I lost count of how many times the words "fag" and "homo" were used in the first hour.
If they had been calling people "n*" as much as they called them "fag" I guarantee this film would be boycotted and picketed all across the nation.

Posted: 1/8/06 at 7:13pmEli Roth made Cabin Fever, the inexplicably well received pile of crap that also mistook horror for gore. Getting a disease that makes you bleed out of your eyes and say "help me" does not make a scary movie. To quote BorstalBoy, he's an obnoxious hack.

Posted: 1/8/06 at 7:48pmDo they have any redeeming qualities? How on earth is the audience supposed to feel sorry for them and the situations they get themselves in??

Posted: 1/8/06 at 7:55pmI thought about that actually, on the way home. The way the audience feels bad for them is that 99% of the audience wasn't offended the way I was and didn't see the exact same movie I did. You "feel bad" for them because they're being tortured and are screaming and bleeding and in all reality shouldn't be in that situation (nobody should). But that still doesn't change the fact that it follows a strict slasher movie formula that never strays from the path of all that came before it.

Funny how you sound off more about the 'homophobia' than the portayal of human beings being sliced and diced. Some priorities.

There wasn't all that much "slicing and dicing", though. As I said this wasn't really a horror movie. There was some gore but I've seen more in a Nightmare on Elm Street movie. And you expect to see that kind of stuff when you go to a movie with a picture of a guy with a chainsaw on the poster. You don't expect the other.

That's because the slicing and dicing of human beings is to be expected from a slasher film.
Sad to hear it's a bad movie.

I've heard a lot of people say it's a misogynistic film, as well as homophobic.
I think I'll pass.

That's just one person's opinion. If you're interested, see it out for yourself.

"That's because the slicing and dicing of human beings is to be expected from a slasher film."
So because it's expected it's acceptable?

For Jeebuz sakes, it's part of the genre. In life, it's not acceptable to blow up things and have car chases either, or to cheer when Mafia Squad #1 beats Mafia Squad #2, or to root for bank robbers. But if you go to see a genre film, you accept its conventions.

Well, Jordan, I'm sorry for your troubles but it isn't like somebody didn't MENTION the homophobia in yesterday's thread. Was it BorstalBoy? You were in that thread too.
I'm curious about this scenario, though:
I was reminded of the guys in high school who went around calling everyone "fag" than went home and stroked it to the gay porn mags they had hidden under their bed.
How is it you know that "the guys" did this?

I know a few who did, Namo, particularly two VERY "hetero" guys who are now out. And they were always the first ones in my high school to call me or others faggot.
Serves 'em right.
And, Hunter, I'd say it's not missed priorities to point out that something such as hate speech in calling people fag in a film is a serious issue when it's a hurtful thing that is incidental to the matter at hand.
It's a slasher flick, so people are going to die and whatnot. You can detest and decry that as much as you want, but the fact of the matter is that going for cheapshots on homosexuals is unnecessary.

I wouldn't even say "serves 'em right." If they had disastrous marriages with women and are now paying alimony and living out of a trailer...serves 'em right.

Heh, they might, Wiz. But what does serve 'em right is that, after all of that emotional crap for doing what they did in high school, I know one of them has been totally ostracized by his family for it.
Not that I'm happy it's one more intolerant family...but karma is a big ol' homosexual bitch.

I saw the movie on Saturday.
I 100% agree with Jordan. This movie wasn't horror at all, I would just call it uncomfortable at times. There are big loop holes in the plot, the acting was very bad, and the story was weak.
I'm a gay man, but I'm not very sensitive to the word fag, homo, etc. but I found myself very uncomfortable and offended after the 100th time they used these slurs.
Save your money, definately NOT worth it. I'd give it 1 star.
