Let me know how it is please...
Johnny Depp looks positively creepy and frightening in this role!! What's with that? Give me Gene Wilder. He was a great Willy Wonka.

People are saying that Depp used Carol Channing as his model for Wonka.
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory": Johnny Depp takes on the Willy Wonka role. From the trailer, he appears to be channeling Carol Channing more than Gene Wilder."

In fact, Depp said he based his "look" for the role on Marilyn Manson.
Why would he want ot imitate Gene Wilder. Wilder's characterization wasn't like Wonka is described in the book either.
Just got back from seeing this. It was enjoyable. The original entrance into "Wonkaland", with the chocolate river is amazing..as is the boat ride, and most of the effects, including the glass elevator.
The kids are great. Freddy Highmore is amazing. All of the kids and parents were quite amusing.
Johnny Depp does NOT remind me of Michael Jackson, and his distain for the children is humorous. The addition of the backstory to explain a bit how Willy Wonka got into the candy business was interesting, but I wondered if it was necessary.
The one thing that really annoyed me were the Oompa-Loompa songs. I didn't really mind that they were very "pop" sounding (OK..it did bug me, but I can get over that) but it was very hard to understand what they were saying. The diction was awful.
One of the best moments for me though was when Charlie says "How did the Oompa Loompas know to put Augustus' name into the song? It's almost like they knew it was going to happen!"
Oooh...and Vercua's demise by squirrels! Brilliant!
Anyway, it's worth seeing. I love "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" but this holds its own!
Thought this was interesting....
in Eberts review of the film, he goes on to call Freddie Highmore Freddie Hightower.
And young Freddie Hightower, who was so good opposite Depp in "Finding Neverland," is hopeful and brave and always convincing as Charlie.
I want to go see it soon. Johnny Depp just looks too much like Michael Jackson....
Gene Wilder always scared me anyway because he looks so much like a child molester at the end of the film. It's yours Charlie. The whole factory. Take it. the way he looks at him... just freaky....
I was fine w/ Gene Wilder, but the grandpa really made me angry, even as a kid.
What kind of impoverished man insists on smoking his pipe but not feeding his family?
He couldn't walk Cheno...I do think it is sad that his main concern was smoking, but oh well.
