re: so who do you think won?

And the normally conservative AOL has Edwards 51% over Cheney 49%.

re: so who do you think won?

Well there's one win for Cheney but he wasn't winning that poll a few minutes ago. Cheney's denial that he never said Saddam Hussein was at the heart of 9/11 was his sinker in the debate. I thought it as I watched the debate and I'm even more certain now. Already tv broadcasts and internet articles are pointing out that he said exactly the opposite a year ago on Meet the Press. Don't believe it wasn't a clear victory for Edwards? Wait a few days.

re: so who do you think won?

If you're a Republican - Cheney won.
If you're a Democrat - Edwards won.
They were more evenly matched than Kerry/Bush and IMO it was pretty much a draw. But no one even came close to eating anyone alive. That's just a pile of horsesh*t!

now curtain i must protest this comment. you know as well as i do that whenever dick cheney is in the room there is the potential for cannibalism.

they both got off good lines ("he voted against meals on wheels" for edwards and the ever popular "you weren't there for thaat vote" for slick dick), but it was pretty much a draw, although i think cheney might get the better of the spin by the mere fact that in general we spin better.

re: so who do you think won?

Dick Cheney was a cruel and heartless man, not voting for the Meals For Wheels.

I also thought that the Martin Luther King thing Edwards mentioned was a stab for the black votes...but that's just me.

re: so who do you think won?

Well, black votes that weren't going to Bush-Cheney anyway (they got 9% of the black vote in 2000).

Cheney ate Edwards alive? Apparently we weren't watching the same debate.

All I can say is atleast it was refreshing to watch TWO people who could hold an intelligent conversation ... unlike last Thursday (although that was much more amusing!)

Don't forget sample bias, folks. Any website polls have self-selected samples.

re: so who do you think won?

I am an undecided voter.
I went into watching the debate tonight disliking both vice presidential candidates.

After its conclusion:
I am surprised to learn that I actually like and respect Cheney.
And I abhor Edwards.

I do not understand why every poll says that that Edwards won.
Were these people watching the same debate that I was?
I'm not going to say that Cheney was perfect, or that I agree with everything he said.
Neither is true.
And I did agree with some of the points Edwards made.

The point is that yes, Edwards is a dynamic speaker.
But he's a jerk.

Now mind you, the reason I was against Edwards going into this is because I have a relative that is an obstetrician. For those of you who do not know, Edwards made millions of dollars off of malpractice against obstetricians. Almost every single one of those cases that he won he should not have won. I worked in a medical office over the summer, and even just off of that I know that he was fighting for cases in which the supposed "malpractice" was NOT the fault of the medical professionals involved. He won because of his skill at using his charm to win over juries.
So therefore, I was wary going into this that he would be able to make things sound good that weren't, taint numbers in his favor, and generally be satanic.
I will therefore admit that I was not completely unbiased, as even though I disliked Cheney, it was less than I dislike Edwards.

After the first debate, I was leaning a bit toward Kerry.
But now, I don't want to vote for Kerry for fear that he'll be assassinated and that ASSHOLE will become president.

If the Bush/Cheney ticket were instead a Cheney/Bush ticket, this election would be simple for me.

re: so who do you think won?

i really liked edward before the debate, but tonight he really turned me off.

- he completely avoided the israel question (what is the plan?) by telling a little vacation story and then talking about saudi arabia and iran. at least cheney answered he question in part(then later when the moderator calls them out for not answering her question, edwards totally made a fool of himself with his response)

- the meals on wheels, and martin luther king stuff? it wasn't a response to cheney's accusation of edwards not even being present for votes. at least cheney was present in the house! plus, those things to me aren't very consequential. we have way too many holidays and why the h*** does the government need to waste its time talking about meals on wheels?

- kept referring to the american forces being 90% of the coallition casualites... leaving out the iraqi forces numbers. is the new iraq not an ally??? that's offensive.

- the comment about cheney not answering the job questions? he did, but he said he thinks the solution is education so he talked about education for part of his time.

overall he looked uncomposed and didn't answer some hard questions. he avoided.

that said, i, too, hate both of them. (that cheney said he didn't link al qaeda to iraq i just about lost my mind with laughter!) i do think cheney won though. i am still undecided. i wish there was a non-scumbag candidate who'd be honest.

re: so who do you think won?

I thought it was a draw. While I agreed with Edwards on everything but his actual stance on marriage specifically, I did feel that Cheney gave a very strong performance.

FF--I think proof is needed to support that Edwards didn't deserve to win nearly ANY of his cases. I'm not going to dispute your opinion of Edwards--it's your opinion based on your experiences and research, etc. But, a statement like that is highly suspicious.

I think Edwards rocked. The consensus following the debate (from non-partisan commentators) is that the debate was a draw. Having said that, some feel that Edwards stands to gain more as he is the new face.

Edwards Stance on marriage is the only thing that made me a little uncomfortable. Cheney just bores me.

re: so who do you think won?

I think both Kerry and Edwards won. They're very dynamic speakers.

I couldn't help but think, when Edwards' family came on in the end, that he has the potential to be the next Kennedy. He's an attractive man, aging well, with a very attractive wife, daughter and two gorgeous kids. Very all american. Also, one can't help but not feel for him for the loss he went through with his oldest son.

re: so who do you think won?

Folks, let us remember that the ONLY poll that counts is the one on election day. Until then everything is meaningless. So remember in order to gripe about the state of things (at least in my presence) get your butt out there and VOTE! Ladies I am really urging you mostly. My grandmother went to jail for trying to cast a ballot. Ok I am now off the soapbox!
Have a great day all. re: so who do you think won?

Seems to me that those who like Cheney are in desperate need of an authoritarian father figure. Maybe they didn't get enough love and attention from Daddy. Personally, he gives me diarrhea.

Way to go, assuming how my father treated me.

(Actually, I'm a Daddy's girl, darn it. I don't like saying that- but I guess I am.)

re: so who do you think won?

I wasn't referring spcifically to you LadyG, or anyone else on this board for that matter. I was making a general statement. The (thankfully) few people I know that like and support Cheney, seem to be missing an authoritarian father figure in their life. But I can also see how being a "daddy's girl" might produce the same result.

re: so who do you think won?

According to Margo, I won. I lost consciousness during the Iraq discussion. All I kept hearng was Cheney saying over and over again about how Edwards' numbers were inaccurate, how Kerry flip-flops, and how Edwards didn't include the Iraqi coalition members into his figures. After 30 minutes of the same responses from Cheney, I got sick of it and read some John Sandford before turning in early.

re: so who do you think won?

Cheney's best moment: needling Edwards on the no-show to vote.

Edwards' best moment: reminding the nation that Cheney lies, consistently, repeatedly, about Iraq. I loved him saying "no connection. PERIOD."

Though I'm entirely biased, since I loathe the Cheney's (lump that wife in) .. I basically agree with Papa and Margo, that toss-up is the fairest appraisal.

But wait--really, though ... shouldn't the powerful old fart incumbent TOPPLE a young whippersnapper? So if you think about it, a draw between them is ultimately a win for Edwards. What Cheney did not succeed in doing is Lloyd Bensen-izing the younger man. If anything, the Bensen line fell into Edwards' mouth when he said "we can't take four more years of this experience." Yes, yes, it reeked of oily trial lawyer speak, you Edwards dissers, and it worked perfectly. He also looked irritated without looking petulant, like W's pissed off Eddie Munster impersonation last Thursday.
