we even had ash in our yard from the San Diego fires a few years ago....
It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story...

Elphaba: I had the same thing! I think our ash was from San Bernardino, but still, it was bizarre. '03, right?

This is the way I celebrate my birthday EVERY year...
Orange County and LA burn to the ground.
It's like a gift.

Man - fires all around - the only place where there are no fires is to the west, because of the Pacific.
San Diego is a nightmare.
I live in an area not directly threatened, but friends and family are being evacuated.
They say that the winds may not calm down for another day or so...
Everyone stay safe.

Take care, YWiW. I'm worried that my grandparents and cousins will have to be evacuated; the fires are moving closer and closer to where they live.

Scary stuff. Best of luck to everyone out there.

Thanks for the good thoughts. I did not mean to say that I was in any risk. Where I am is totally safe.
I am more worried about trying to get the townhouse I just bought habitable so my cousin and her kids can stay there for at least a few days until this calms down.
I worry for friends and family - personally, this will have little or no impact on where I live. It is just trying to make sure everyone else is OK.
I have friends of friends who have lost their homes - pets as well.

This is a nightmare - I think I will be going to Orange County later tonight.

I'm from San Diego and was there for the Cedar Fires, but according to my friends who still live there, it's much worse. All the public schools are canceled until further notice and my old town I used to live in is on the brink of a mandatory evacuation.
It's pretty scary stuff to have to hear about from 3,000 miles away. Half my family and friends live in San Diego so it's really stressful.

Most of my family lives in the area; it's definitely stressful. My cousin flew out of L.A. today, and he said seeing the flames/smoke from the air was incredibly alarming.

Neddy - not in SD, but Topanga Canyon and Canyon Country, as well as Stevenson Ranch.
I am in West LA, close to LAX, so I have no direct threat to my place - just friends and family.
SD seems to be getting the worst of it right now.
I will keep a good thought for you.

I'm near downtown LA, so we haven't been affected too much yet... but some friends of mine are at UC San Diego, and they tell me that the university is considering evacuating... crazy.

Apparently a lot of the 15 is shut down so it's hard for people to get North. Del Mar and Caramel Valley were just evacuated. This is really scary, I just found out my Aunt was urged to evacuate to Qualcom.

Best of luck to all those around the affected areas!!

It is weird.
For those of you who don't know San Diego the way it is layed out on the coast is:
- Carmel Valley
- Del Mar
- Solana Beach
- Encinitas
- Carlsbad
Every one of those areas has evacuated except for Encinitas, which is where I am....

My aunt is in Cardiff and she said that she was told it might be a good choice for her to evacuate the area. It's not mandatory, though.

Crazy. Things have gotten so out of control... The theatre I'm supposed to start work at on Thursday is in Escondido, which has fires raging within city limits and has been partially evacuated. It's in the foothills, so it very well could succumb.
Of course, I'm far more worried about all the residents of San Diego County than I am about my job.
I'm praying very hard for everyone!
Oh, and Abba: La Verne is fine. Don't worry.

Today is going to be the biggest challenge - even hotter weather, and more wind.
I am just keeping my fingers crossed that the amazing fire men and women can find a way to contain some of these fires.
You just sit and watch and feel lucky that they are not near you - and then just wonder what you can do to help.
I have a feeling that the unpacking for my move may become much more of a giving away of stuff I really don't need.
This had taken about 700 homes already. I cannot even imagine.
Everyone be safe, and if anyone has heard from DG, let me know.
Be well everyone.
And, to Glen Beck on CNN - shame on you. You are a horrible human being. CNN has lost a viewer because of you repeated, insulting remarks, with this cherry on top:
Glen Beck's Hateful Spew.
