Posted: 8/31/04 at 2:09amSo I love the fact that politicians will not address this Social Security issue. I was talking about this in my Global Studies Class. The government is screwing us, the younger generation over when it comes to health care. We are going to have an extremely high tax base because of this and politicians won't mention a word. Why? Because the second they say they are going to have to raise taxes we vote them out of office. How are we so stupid? We are one of the wealthiest countries in the world and can afford more taxes (especially companies that have cheated the government out of tax dollars, but thats another story) I know it really pisses me off that people are ignoring the problem now and shoving off the problem onto us. We are going to get ut benefits at this rate. Does the older generation realize that they are screwing us over? This is one thing that really bothers me but I felt the need to get it out. All of you younger posters need to know we are going to get screwed over and it looks like not much can be done because adults are so anal about taxes. You 12 and 13 year olds, once you get out in the real world make sure you save up because the government is most likely going to screw us over by making us pay for all the baby boomers and then give us jack squat when we retire. Ok I am ranting so I'll stop. I need sleep and I'll be back tomorrow to discuss this more. (Hopefully this won't get deleted, but I am mad.)

Well, Sonn, see, that's one of the fun things about Bush's tax reform. He cut taxes and suddenly, when 9/11 happened, we got to dip back into deficit spending to payfor everything. And he wants to extend his tax cut again. Not a good idea. How can you ask Americans now not to pay for what he's doing? Reagan may have done good things, but took until Clinton to acknowledge that we had inherited a financial burden that needed to be paid and now Bush has easily reversed that.

Posted: 9/1/04 at 4:24amThe real sin about Social Security is that it was supposed to be a separate fund, but it has consistently been raided (by both parties, over many years)and used for "general operating expenses" so to speak. If it had been left in it's account, untouched, all the money the baby boomers had paid in and all the interest it had accrued over the last 50 years or so would have been adequate, and it would continue to grow and take care of each successive generation as they needed it. The government has instead broken that most fundamental promise of long-term security to provide short-term benefit to constituents while still protecting them from the pain and distress of the taxes requires to actually pay for their pork-barrel goodies.

As Garrison Keillor refently pointed out in an eloquent essay at InTheseTimes.com, Richard Nixon was the last Republican with a sense of Christian obligation to the poor. Since Reagan, it has been nothing but "I got mine, I don't care if you get yours, in fact I don't want you to get yours if it means I have to give up some of my excess," "Greed is good," selfishness, selfishness, selfishness.

Posted: 9/1/04 at 11:01pmBroadway Monkey, you think YOU hate getting screwed. You at least have time to make alternate plans. Think of the 60-somethings who are just hearing Fed. Chairman Greenspan saying that benefits will have to be adjusted, and the ones just behind them who pretty much know that means there will be NOTHING left for them.
