Hi guys,
I am putting together a cabaret show and I am looking for a song about being a swing or an understudy in musical theater. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help!
Would "Never the Luck" work? (It's from "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" and is sung by the 'understudy/swing' of the company)
"Little Do They Know" from The Act is about how hard dancers work behind a star, making the star look good, yet the star gets all the applause and recognition. Not quite the same thing as you're looking for, but might convey a similar theme.
Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but Playing Second Fiddle (from Nunsense) or Alto's Lament?
'Understudy' by Bobby Cronin
linky dink
Not sure if this would work for your show, as it has lyrics specifically about being Christian Borle's understudy (maybe there are alt lyrics out there?) but "Understudy Blues" by Amanda Yesnowitz and Brian Cimmet:

Along with "Playing Second Fiddle" there is also "I Just Wanna Be a Star" from Nunsense.
"She's No Longer A Gypsy" from APPLAUSE
Kind of a stretch, but Diva's Lament from Spamalot.

Thank you so much for the wonderful suggestions!
