Two movie studios (Warner Bros. and Paramount) join forces to release the girl group flicks, "SPARKLE" [1976] and "DREAMGIRLS" [2006] as a special Double Feature blu-ray. Available on 10/15/2013.
Thanks for sharing. I'll gift a few family members with copies. I still haven't seen the recent remake of 'Sparkle' as I was warned by several ole skoolers to avoid it:) I'm also still not comfortable watching the late Whitney Houston as a shell of her former self.
'Sparkle' the original was a very moving flick and 'Dreamgirls' on screen was somewhat entertaining to me at least. Irene Cara/Phillip Michael Thomas became everyone in my neighborhood's instant dream date depending on your bent. They made quite the couple on screen.
That's great! I saw SPARKLE when it was originally released. My older cousin was baby sitting me (I was all of 6 years old) and she took me along because she really had no choice! I have a soft spot for the film. It was released in May on blu-ray so I already have it in that format.
As far as the remake it does have it's merits. The characterizations are more fleshed out and Carmen Ejogo just about steals the film out from under everybody - - - including Whitney Houston.
Lonette McKee was the stand out for me in the original 1976 film but her character's fate just halfway into the film was just too damned abrupt for me and without her in it in the second half was a real let down. The Curtis Mayfield songs however are classics all the way.
A lot of studios are doing these "bundling" releases. They can sell very well at great prices.
I know Grease and Saturday Night Fever are together. Forrest Gump and The Green Mile. Gladiator and Braveheart.
Good stuff.
Yeah they are cool. The funny thing with these two films is that they are both from competing studios. SPARKLE is a Warner Bros. film while DREAMGIRLS is a Paramount film. So I was kind of surprised they did this.
There are tons of these bundles coming out.
Here's a secret:
Best Buy has an exclusive contract with several studios where they sell all kinds of cool BD bundles (many of them with 4 films on 2 discs) that you won't find anywhere else.
It's worth going into the actual store and browsing if you're trying to upgrade your collection or even just looking for a great deal.
I recently bought the Lethal Weapon set with all 4 movies for 14.99 in the store. The official BD box set retails for 49.99.
Wow, I had no idea you were that old; welcome to the old geezers club:)
Yep, Lonette's early exit was not the business bro. She could light up the screen. In fact I believe she was my first milf.
I only buy "bundle" discs if they're the same series of film, like LETHAL WEAPON or BATMAN since I can't stand to have movies not be alphabetical in my 2000+ disc collection.
^Dude, 2000+...that's impressive.
It's my one vice. I used to have a lot more but had to downsize which almost killed me. But I hate having them out of alphabetical order. HATE IT.
Carlos, I've seen bundle deals crossing studios lately, which I'm thrilled about. That used to be "sleeping with the enemy" as far as retail sales go, but it makes sense with certain titles.
Some of them are obviously easy, like the Marilyn Monroe box set which has both Fox and MGM/UA movies in it. But since Fox owns the MGM/UA library, that works out well, which is why you have Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in with Some Like It Hot.
Same thing with the Fred & Ginger DVD set, which has all of their RKO movies together, plus the one MGM movie (Berkeleys of Broadway) as well. All their films. Because Warner Home Entertainment owns the rights to the old MGM/Turner library and the RKO library.
Nice for the consumer.
I also only buy bundles of series Jordan.
What do you mean THAT OLD?!!! Say that ish to my face! LMAO!!
