I know I may get murdered for this thread but oh-well...
What is with people's obsession with spelling and grammer? This is a Broadway board, not an English/grammar board.
Why do many of you feel the need to fix and argue over these mistakes, many which are small. Many threads start on topic but they always seem to drift off in the 'wrong direction.'
We are here for the love of theatre- right? If you feel the need to correct grammar and spelling, I suggest that you get your BA in English and become a teacher at school- not on a Broadway board.
Today people are using "u" "2" " bcuz" "ur" and so many others. Is that how one should write a paper? No. Do you think you are going to fix people's writing on this board or is it just going to make people frustrated?
Some spelling and grammar can be annoying, especially those which cannot be comprehended.
If you cannot understand stand something someone wrote- I think it would be nicer to say something to the effect of "I don't understand, could you rephrase that?" instead of "English please!" or fixing every mistake you see.
Thank you!

What do you do with a BA in English?

Why? Because the luxury of a message board (as opposed to instant messages)is that one has the ability to craft, edit, or proofread one's post. Hell, there's even an edit feature. It's really not all that difficult to check the spelling of a word on Dictionary.com. When someone is casual about writing, people tend to take the message less seriously. I rarely bother reading something which uses "u", "2", "Bcuz", BECAUSE I assume the author is either too young to know better or an idiot.
And as far a a theater board not being the place for correct grammar and spelling...are you kidding? Theater is based on writing. Without penned dramas, there would be precious little theater. If theater lovers don't have respect for the written word, then who?

Why?
Because theatre is about the spoken language, and to be effective the spoken language is dependent on grammar and spelling.
Yes, spelling is a factor in spoken language. If one is not able to spell correctly the meaning of words is lost. (Quite often the difference between words is a subtle; sometimes in meaning, sometimes in spelling.) When there is no understanding of meaning, and incorrect spelling this leads to improper grammar. Therefore, one may easily be doomed to a life of using "axe" for "ask," and "the angels will weep," and so will your bank account.
Just ask Eliza.

#14re: Spelling/Grammer Errors
Posted: 11/7/05 at 8:53amI refuse to even use "r" and "u" and "4" in text messages. If I don't have time to spell it out, the message isn't that important.

Well, i guess some of us just feel that one should be able to speak and write in their native-tongue.
I find nothing more embarrassing then someone who cannot do the above.
But I am the same way with the German language.
If you don't have respect for your native language, you don't have respect for who you are.

It's not a HUGE problem, SweetQ, but it does temper one's opinion of a poster who doesn't know how to spell. A typo is one thing, but if you don't know how to write fairly properly, then it's hard to take you seriously. That's the rhetorical "you," by the way. :)
And I, Brenda, do not live to attack people. I like reading posts of those with like minds, and even those with no mind at all.

Today, people under the age of 18 are using "u" "2" "bcuz", not everyone. I'm barely out of that demographic and I even use proper spelling and grammar in text messages, on AIM, etc.
There's a huge difference between a BA in English and the "OMG ROTFLMFAO" crap people post. Since the vast majority of the posters here manage to use proper English, maybe you should just elevate the style of your posts to match it instead of complaining.
