I must side with the bitches on this one. There is just no excuse for mangling one's mother tongue. I realize the public education system in America is hardly stellar, but one should still make an effort to appear literate, or at the very least, not horribly lazy.

And for the love of Melissa, there is no "i" in "boy!"

But the issue here isn't whether or not someone should make the effort (of course, they should), the issue, is whether or not it is acceptable to call them on it. Naturally, the Bitches have twisted it to satisfy their bitch-needs!

Of course, it's acceptable. Hell, since when isn't *anything* fair game?

Good question…I suppose, on one hand, one could say “it’s just an anonymous message board… who really cares about the grammar/spelling/punctuation/syntax/general-use-of-the-English-
language-when-addressing-an-
infinite-and-unknown-public-who-may-
horribly-judge-one-
based-upon-one’s-butchery-of-the-medium” and let it go.

On the other hand, one could say “If the debasement of the language isn’t pointed out and corrected, the offender may develop a lifelong habit of (ab)using the language this way and will be subject to embarrassment and belittling by those more linguistically astute for the rest of their existence”, and justify it as a public service for the good of mankind. re: Spelling/Grammar Errors

The third option, personally speaking, is to finally confess that I actually don’t give a rodent’s posterior either way, and am just being pedantic for the sake of pedantry, because I am astonishingly bored at work and a bit cranky today and have nothing better to do. *cherubic smile*

Your third paragraph, Jailyard, should be in my avatar.

And if you want to call me a bitch, Brendan, please do. Just make it singular and wet. And I'll do return the favor--at least the wet part.

You forgot to add, Jaily, the point about other people having to read what's written. Respect for your fellow poster.

I'm sorry, but simple grammar mistakes drive me crazy. It's not like they are really difficult to remember or apply. And when used incorrectly, it makes the author appear ignorant and difficult to take seriously. Which is why I created this refresher page of common grammatical errors....

Cheers to Rath...thanks for catching that. :) It's very important to consider that others might actually want to *read* what we've written, and forcing someone to actually read it out loud phoenetically to understand what you wrote isn't very nice!

U no wut I meen?

Generally, I take one's argument more seriously if an attempt at proper spelling and grammar has been made.

And on this topic (sort of), I think my biggest pet peeve online is when someone types something and then types "(sp?)" after it. You're on the freaking internet! You can look up practically anything you want. Unless it's a word that's not yet been added to a dictionary or a name that yields no Google hits, typing "(sp?)" just reeks of pure laziness.

Well, typos are one thing (and they are forgiveable). It's the "OMG ILUV IDINA CAN YOU GET ME ADRES 4 PBLK THTR PLZZZ. ILL <3 U 4EVA!" business that makes my head spin.

Correcting a typo is a bit obsessive. Correcting sheer and utter disregard for the English language is perfectly justified.

Perhaps, Peach, but I just don't get why it's so hard to do a spell check, or for people to grasp that "your" does not mean "you are."

Generally I agree, especially about common gramatical mistakes, there is no excuse for most of them.

Spell check is useful, and I always check on difficult words, but the common ones always get by me. It seems unnecessary to need to look up every word one by one.

Not that I hold it against anyone who wants to correct my spelling, I just become anoyed when an entire thread goes offline over a simple spelling mistake, that has no effect on the meaning of the whole post. Such as one time when I misspelled "sentence."

I will not abide by "internet speak" though, there are other forums for that.

But you have to admit, in an evironment where threads get jacked on a consistent basis, more often than not heading down a tangent into online foreplay, correcting the English language isn't so unforgiveable. Not everyone cherishes watching and interesting thread morph into a "who's hot" thread either, for what it's worth. I frequently lose interest in a thread for that reason, but at least if the spelling and grammar is correct, it doesn't really piss me off.

I don't mind threadjacking in most cases, but once again a diatribe against someone for something minor does seem very petty.

Again I am not saying correcting grammar and spelling is wong, I think it should be done, yet there are degrees.

Errors in a subject line or in a message typed in all caps beg to be commented upon. I don't think I could possibly resist. Soap box or self-righteous messages fall into the same category, too. (You think I don't know the risks here? I've been spell-checking like crazy.)

Language is about communication; standardization of spelling and grammar eases communication, thus serving language in a positive way.

And if you really think that having proper grammar and spelling is the domain of people with BAs in English, it's no wonder you have issues with it. Barring outside circumstances like learning English as a second language, you should be able to write properly well before you're 18, let alone 22.

This isn't instant messaging, gone and forgotten in a matter of seconds; it's a quasi-permanent post you're making. So if you don't have enough respect for your message to use standard English, I don't see why I should show any respect for it myself.
