Spelling/Grammar Errors

Like I said before, I would never single someone out for a typo. They happen, and to me, they are forgivable on a message board. As long as I can understand what I'm reading, no problem with a typo here. Heck, I make them - unintentionally, and somewhat frequently.
IM speak, however, is just lazy and unnecessary when one has access to a complete keyboard at his or her fingertips. Plus, it makes things so difficult for us old folks to read! Gosh darnit!

I also really hate adding the "'s" to pluralize a word. It makes me wonder if the author ever graduated 5th grade. I mean, do they honestly believe the longest running musical on Broadway was "CAT'S"? Did they see "Dirty Rotten Scoundrel's"? Or perhaps they attended the opening night of "They Jersey Boy's".
It's shameful, is what it is. SHAMEFUL!!

Whoa! I get back from class and there are 5 pages of posts.
First of all, I don't think people who post here on BWW write the same way in a professional paper. In a professional paper, everything needs to be proper. No double exclamation points (!!) None of the asterik (*) stuff, make sure all semi-colons are in the right place as are commas. If everyone is using all those things correctly, then you can fix others but until you are grammatically perfect and spell everything correctly, I don't think it is your job to be fixing. These posts are not getting graded. They are being read by members who enjoy theatre, not English/grammar. I'm sure there is a bored for those who want to talk about that and critisize. Is it the best thing to do (sp?) after a word you might have misspelled? No, it's not the best but again, this post is not getting graded.
People may not take a post as seriously if something is majorly misspelled or abbreviated but unless all your post are perfect- I'm not sure the deal.
On the other hand with the whole deal of-
"OMG ILUV IDINA CAN YOU GET ME ADRES 4 PBLK THTR PLZZZ. ILL <3 U 4EVA!"
That is annoying. I don't call that shorthand or lazy but rather attention seeking, especially with all the caps.
There is a difference between being lazy and just being quick.
*Waiting for my mistakes to be fixed and to be trampled over*

Posted: 11/7/05 at 5:02pmIt's not double exclamation points that make me want to go on a rampage- it's 52 of them all in a post-distorting row. Do people not realize that after a certain point adding more of them doesn't mean anything? And no one here is demanding perfect, essay-style grammar and spelling in all posts.

I went back to 2:45, so this is two hours of mistakes.
Robbo, it was ten in 2 hours as noted below. My sheer volume of mistakes and posts was much higher than everyone elses.
Mostly spelling of easy words I didn't bother to look back on, with two actual grammatical slips and a typo.
Here they are:
"Me too.
Although I often put in mistakes on purpose to make a point as well."
"I agree the willful ignorance is reprehensible." 1 (comma splice)
"OS, it is moving more and more into commonly accepted speech, but "y'all" is not proper English grammar. The plural form of you in English is simply you, not you all. Again, the other form is becoming more common, but it is not the "grammatical rule.""
2 and 3 (spelling of becoming and grammatical)
"The grammatically correct term for that is "all of you." "
"I am not saying that "you all" should be as undervalued as it is, but it remains far from being accepted as English standard. Y'all is therefore even more apt to be dismissed."
"Following and correcting other's uses of, grammatical rules is part of what this thread is indicates." 4 (originally all about, improper use of preposition)
"I tend to agree that in most common usage it can be "acceptable" but it remains far from "accepted," especially among teachers and writers." 5 (among)
"Both "y'all" and "ain't" are perfectly appropriate for effect, yet isn't that part of the point, to use them on occasion but not generally?
Robbo, neither horse is dead, the discussion flows from both sides and has included some give and take."
"orangeskittles, I was born in Georgia, grew up in Alabama, went to college in Georgia and lived in North Carolina for several years after that."
"Did you catch that jailyard guy and I are both southerners.
Maybe that actually has something to do with why I dislike the term so much?"
"That was probably a good plan, it doesn't bother me now, but in that context I think it would have bothered me a lot. My argument is not about hating things associated with the south, although I do dislike a great deal of them.
I simply think of y'all as a corruption of the language." 6 (spelling of argument)
"I agree with the basic point that you are making, the use of the term is not an indicator of "lower intelligence" that some seem to think that is a problem, as with the "southern accent" calling someone to think you are less intelligent." 7, 8, 9 spelling of intelligence and intelligence. Pure typo of cauing for calling.
"I do think, especially outside the south, the term should not be used. It is a corruption of the language, and why should southerners be blamed for screwing something else up.
Well as the "real southerner" heah, let me say y'all don't know what we have to put up with being from Georgia. (And the adamant nature of Jailyard's denial of being southern speaks volumes.)" 10 (spelling of adamant)
"OS, from the opposite gender it is not the case, a slip of the drawl has gotten me the most condescending comments you can imagine. I don't even sound particularly southern, but on occasion in class someone will say, "I can't understand that mumbled drawl, if you can't be clear don't talk." I have very good diction, it is a shot at my background and I dislike it intensely. Yet I still remove y'all from this, I never have used the term. (In common speech, again as joke or for emphasis I have used it.)"
There they are all 10.

I not only have my BA in English, I have an MA as well. In fact, I have 30 credits above my MA. I also teach English and have done so for 34 years. Oh yes, I am one of the contributing writers for this site. Nothing pleases me more than having one of the celebrities I've interviewed tell me that my article about them was well-written. That's something I strive for.
The proper use of English is very important to me. It's not something that ends when I leave the classroom. If people have a good command of the language, they express themselves more clearly and forcefully. Of course, if you want to sound like an immature geek, go right ahead and use improper grammar and spelling. To add insult to injury, make the word "amazing" your adjective of choice. I'll continue to correct you.
#110re: Spelling/Grammar Errors
Posted: 11/7/05 at 6:03pmThe overuse of the word, amazing, is my only pet peeve here. However, I don't tend to point it out, everytime somebody uses it. I wonder, if everyone is so frigging amazing, then why am I so un-entertained?
#111re: Spelling/Grammar Errors
Posted: 11/7/05 at 6:10pmMaybe they mean it in the archaic use of "bewildering and perplexing" most things it is used for qualify as that.

Many of you have provided sufficient personal information regarding your geographical origins that, coupled with your Star Wars names, computer databases can be searched at 10 times light speed and all of your credit cards can be charged to the maximum limit without your awareness. Also, with just the little bit of information abour your linguistic prowess that you have provided a suitable mate can be found for you at Harmony. com.
I just thought you should be aware of how much information you are providing.

Posted: 11/7/05 at 10:45pmJose, I have never posted a Star Wars name, or my real name on the boards. I also always throw in a small bit of fake info with the real, if they steal my real idenity they are good. Not to mention I actually live in the public eye already, this board is the least of my internet problems.
#124re: Spelling/Grammar Errors
Posted: 11/7/05 at 11:16pmThen why am I still single Jose'? Is the force not with me? Or are my occasional gramatical mistakes putting me on the list? Updated On: 11/7/05 at 11:16 PM
