Spielberg's Lincoln Trailer!

Well, the trailer seems to foreground the slick Spielberg glossy production and obligatory John Williams score swelling dramatically in the background so we'll all know exactly how to feel, with lots of those patented Spielbergian closeups of Deeply Moved People with their eyes filling with tears...

Not my cup of historical fiction tea. At all. And you just know the last words of the film will be "now he belongs to the ages...."

I agree with the schmaltzy, sentimental comments. Every shot, every music cue, and every line chosen for the trailer seems to yell from the highest mountaintop, "LINCOLN WAS A GREAT MAN".

Not unexpected from Spielberg, but a bit surprising coming from Tony Kushner. Maybe the trailer is a bit of misdirection. People will flock to see this, I'm sure.

Daniel-Day Lincoln spends a lot of time with a furrowed brow, leaning over a desk or table in the shots chosen for this.

Somebody I know brought this up which I think was a good point. Why is the visual palate and lighting to this film, in the 1860s, look exactly like the 20th century Spielberg films War Hose and Munich? Why no natural lighting? Also DDL's method actor prep for filming (which actually sounds incredibly obnoxious) included living in a electricity free house so there was possible reason to assume the way this would be shot had some naturalism. Though some of the daytime congress scenes in the trailer do look like it only contains natural light.

It's funny the mention of War Horse. Watching the Lincoln trailer I felt the same thing. Then again seeing War Horse on a large movie screen when at the end instead of coming back to the farm I felt they took a detour to Tara instead.

That scene took me right out of War Horse and into Gone With the Wind.

I like that David from Dark Shadows is in it. So the vampire connection is there.

I'll be interested to see what Kushner makes of Goodwin's book.

Yeah, it is just a trailer after all, but Spielberg isn't usually one to indulge in that kind of misdirection, I think.

And Kushner's involvement is encouraging, but let's not forget that Spielberg got no less than Tom Stoppard to write the abominable script for EMPIRE OF THE SUN, the film that turns J.G. Ballard's astonishing novel about the horror of war into a sanitized story about a boy who wants his mommy.

Lincoln was a very complex and divisive man, and I would think in this day and age we'd get a film about him that was more than just The Lincoln Memorial: The Movie.

Nothing about the look of the trailer makes me feel like "I was there" in the thick of the turmoil, the decision-making, the doubt, the fear, etc. There's no realness at all. No sense of what it was like to be alive in the 1850s and '60s.

It just makes me feel like I opened a holiday Hallmark card instead. It's a gilded pageant.

You would think 75 years after "Gone With the Wind," someone could do better with at least the authenticity of that era. The only thing missing here in 2012 are the 1940s snoods.

I'm glad David O. Selznick still has a career in the 21st century.

Best, I have to agree with you whole heartedly 100%. Granted this is based on the trailer and my knowledge of Spielberg's previous works (which from E.T. on I have found heavy handed manipulative schmaltz). I seriously think I was one of the only people who despised E.T.! To this day I cannot watch it without wanting to kick in the TV.

I couldn't disagree more. I saw a screening a week and a half ago and was mezmerized by the film. It's was a staggering piece of work that really left us stunned at the end of it. I thought it was going to be a parade of supporting actors (and there is a line of them) but they all fit their parts so well. And the production design was amazing.

Please stop infringing on people's freedom of speech to know everything about a movie just by seeing a trailer! Playing the "I've actually seen the movie those of you who haven't but are criticizing it anyway" card is practically a form of hate speech.

Knowing Kushner did the screenplay I am looking forward to the flashback scenes with Joshua Speed (Hopefully played by Peter Sarsgaard in an un-credited appearance.)

The New York Times and Roger Ebert both gave the film great reviews.
From the Times: "Go see this movie. Take your children, even though they may occasionally be confused or fidgety. Boredom and confusion are also part of democracy, after all. “Lincoln” is a rough and noble democratic masterpiece — an omen, perhaps, that movies for the people shall not perish from the earth."
Since it's in limited release now I'm hoping to see it this weekend.

Once again, the same old, "funny," slow-witted people can't tell the difference between thoughts on a trailer (yes, that's what this thread is about) and thoughts on the actual movie.

I, however, can.

I'm pleasantly surprised and glad to see the positive reviews from critics and posters here, and I look forward to seeing the movie soon!
