Before your beloved Spotlight starts winning all of its major awards, you all should realize something about both Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer. They are both hypocrites. If they made a film that is trying to tell the truth about horrible things done by priests, then they should not lie about a real-life person in it. Jack Dunn said he was immediately aware of the issues involved and worked to respond.

This film is making him look like a full-fledged villain. Look at the hypocrisy of what McCarthy is saying.

"We understand that not everyone will embrace the way they are portrayed in the film, but we feel confident, based on our extensive research, that the movie captures with a high degree of authenticity the nature of events, personalities, and pressures of the time.”

His and Singer's version of real-life person, Steve Kurkjian, is inaccurately portrayed as well. In the film, he is a curmudgeon who was dismissive of the importance of the story and that is not what happened in real life as well.

I will never defend the disgusting acts that the priests and other people did to innocent children. The monsignor at my church committed crimes like these and I was completely appalled. However, once he was dismissed the church and its school became safer and happier. That man is not allowed to come back to mass ever again. There is no perfect church on Earth because no one for a long time has been born without sin. Look at what was revealed about the Church of Scientology recently. I don't think Hollywood will ever make a film about the sex-abuse in public schools, which was reported by the Associated Press in 2007 because they consider those schools superior.

In conclusion, I am sick of Hollywood doing this. It happened ten years ago with the portrayal of Vivian Liberto and her divorce with Johnny Cash in Walk the Line and then with Ronald Reagan and LBJ in The Butler and Selma respectively. Also, Disney never fully told the truth about the working relationship between Walt Disney and P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks. To all of you who disagree me all I can say is,

And no I don't mean what Goldberg's character really meant to say.

This does seem to be the first thread on Spotlight, so I'm not sure who this is addressing, but is it actually possible to turn months of facts into a two-hour entertaining movie without compositing a bit or cutting some corners? A movie can't even capture the intricacies of a novel very well, so I'm not sure why this comes up every year.

I do think you're giving the church a pass on this, though, by making the evildoers "priests and other people," where nearly all of these cases had systemic coverups and such. From the quote you pasted, it seems like the filmmakers are aware of the accusations and are comfortable that they captured what they wanted. I never heard of any of these cases where there was one, agreed-upon record.

And the debunking/proof of character assassination is a blog post from the guy's friend?

Really? This is the single most bizarre comment I've ever read on this debacle. Efforts to contextualize a global pandemic in the Catholic Church by citing Scientology and strangest of all, anecdotal evidence based innuendo about public school abuse strains in extreme. This film reports the known, systemic, institutionalized cover-up of crime -- remember crime, as opposed to "sin?" -- by layers of bureaucracy. Criminality, let's please spell it out once again. Those pertinent, damning facts remain. Obfuscating the horror by suggesting that such behavior is ubiquitous only minimizes the outrageous lapses by the Church. No, nothing is comparable. Nothing. Whatever this film did to tell the story doesn't deter from the truth. Remember the truth? This film shines a light on it. Therein lies the blessing.

You seem to have a lot of anger looking for a outlet.

They're just movies. Their goal is first and foremost to entertain. They are not billed as documentaries.

SPOTLIGHT (cue Madonna B-side) looks exactly like the kind of glorified TV-movie that passes as prestige these days a la SELMA.

Speaking of TV, didn't Canadian television cover Catholic priest abuse 23 years ago THE BOYS OF ST. VINCENT with an unforgettable performance by Henry Czerny? Way to play catch up, Hollowood.

Hypocrisy?

I might well agree with you if the movie was about a newspaper's investigation into defamation or misrepresentation and its cover up. But it's not. It's about a newspaper's investigation into child sexual abuse by the church and its cover up.

The two kinds of wrongs can't possibly be equated. Therefore, this is not hypocrisy.

Aiming to tell the truth about an investigation into child sexual abuse by priests is commendable. And falsely portraying an adult actually involved in the story is certainly objectionable. Even when that adult has, as he does in this case, a relatively minor role in the narratives.

But both acts wouldn't make the filmmakers hypocrites or the movie necessarily unworthy of praise or awards. Rather, all it means that the filmmakers should be taken to task for a specific failing and that the movie has an isolated critical flaw. It might even arguably mean that the filmmakers should be subject to legal action. But it doesn't mean they are hypocrites.

Some posters are here have said things about the Church, which sounded downright hateful to me and I was addressing them. Broadway World users need to understand that even some of their favorite theater performers who stand for Gay rights respect the Church. Kelli O'Hara and Norm Lewis who took part in the NoH8 campaign performed in front of Pope Francis earlier this year. And so did Jennifer Hudson, who created a music video about same-sex love. That concert also had Gloria Estefan perform who has been known for supporting marriage equality. Let's not also forget the late Howard Ashman trusted Jodi Benson, who is very religious, with a lot of his work despite having different beliefs than her.

I also came across some other article. Brian d'Arcy James, who is in this film did say some positivr things about the Church in the video from 3:12 to 3:18.

Stanley Tucci also said this about the film, "“Its not a condemnation of Catholicism it is a condemnation of the people who abused the basic tenets of Catholicism and Christianity… and those people, unfortunately, were very high up in the Catholic church.”

Still, after seeing what the movie did to Steve Kurkjian, it is still coming as the exact opposite of what Tucci said in the first sentence of his quote. Now that I have said what I need to say I want to spend me time focusing on the true meaning of Christmas.

I think you're really blowing up something that takes place in about 30 seconds in the movie into the ONE THING that's the deal breaker for you, and if it weren't that, you'd find something else. It's a very minor point. But you seem to be clinging to it like it's the last life preserver on the Titanic.

If you really must know, it was SNAFU, Jordan Catalano, Phyllis Rogers Stone, adam_greer, and Carlos Alberto. ETA: tabzer and Mister_Matt might have said something else as well. My thoughts on the film still stand. However, after going to a children's mass today and since the world is celebrating Christ's birth I must remember that is important for me to have courage and be kind. I saw the film today and thought it was brilliant. I hope it wins every award and reminds the world of what a horrible institution the Catholic Church is. I'm an atheist but for this, I hope there is a hell so that all the countless kiddie f*cking priests and everyone else who helped and still helps cover these molestations up, is sentenced to eternity burning in it.

Fascinating that a trip to church, a bit of holiday spiritual buzz in the ether creates a patronizing mindset of "forgiveness" rather than a hard line examination of the facts and the truth. Jesus was born. His birth is celebrated. Many priests abused children. Ironically, these things are entirely unrelated, no mater the institutional motivation for conflating them.
